Ok..this will sound weird..but does anyone remember having books as a child which had tools with them...I had a spy book or maybe it was famous five (or something like that) and it had little tools which you needed in certain parts of the book..like binocolous which you held over words to descramble codes and so on. I am wondering if you can still get them as my 8 year old would love them.

I don't remember them but they sound fun. I thought from the thread title that you meant those 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books that had different options for things that happened in the story, and different endings.

If your child likes puzzles and codes etc., they might enjoy room escape games on the internet. You are shut in a virtual room and have to solve clues and look for objects to help you escape. FreakinRooms.com (think that's right) has loads - I only discovered them recently and they are great fun.

Sorry can't help with your book request though.

Thanks for your reply. I loved choose your own adventure books ..do they still do that range I wonder? I found some similar ones in the library for him and he loves them... I got him a Doctor Who one and he was confused at first as he doesn't watch it and wondered why I'd got him it. I then explained how the books worked and he was off ! Loved it!

That website looks cool.. Will check it out.. Do you think it is for his age group as he gets very wound up if he can't do things straight away.

Some of them are a bit tricky, but the good ones have a walkthrough if he gets stuck. There is a treehouse one which is quite good, and an attic one.

Might be best for you to check them out first though, just to make sure they aren't too complicated. Don't want the mouse hurled through the computer screen!!!

I REMEMBER THOSE! Can't for the life of me remember what they were called though. I think I was about 8 or 9 years old so would have been around 1988/89.

thanks for that CuppaTeaJanice..I will check them out!

Horray! Some else remembers those books! I am not mad! I can't remember how old I was but would of been 14 in 1988 and suspect I may have been slightly younger than that when I read them. I would Google to find out what they were called but don't quite know what terms to search for.."interactive book" doesn't quite seem right?

I am going shopping next week so I may ask in a childrens book department in Waterstones or something to see what they know and whether these books still exist

I had them, I absolutely LOVED them - I had one called The Wreckers Tower game and one called the Sinister Lake game, and one that wasn't Famous Five and was about a Ghost Train but can't remember what it was called.

Anyway, if you type "Famous Five adventure games" into Amazon, you get a whole list grin
