Book gift ideas for 9 year old boy/girl twins in Canada

We're going to visit our relatives in Canada this summer and I'm struggling to find a suitable present for our almost 9 year old niece and nephew.

I was hoping to get them something 'British' but in todays 'global' society, I am struggling to find anything that they can't get just as easily themselves in Canada.

So I though a nice, classic book would be nice for each of them. Does anyone have any recommendations for 8-9 year old average readers?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

There is one on another thread here

What about 'Where's Wally'-type thing, as classics can be a bit hard going.

Why don't you opt for a Roald Dahl book? They are incredibily British, he was born in Cardiff after all!
There are two books about Dahl's life, called Boy and Flying solo, great books, and autobiographies rather than fiction, plus he had an amazing life and something which 8-9 yr old would really like.

Also if you want modern good british writing, I would opt for the girl to get, Emily Windsnap by Liz Kessler, it's Harry Potter but in with mermaids and mermen, instead of witches and wizards. There's no content in there you need to be concerned about either.

Alternative is you get her something classic but Canadian, like Anne of Green gables. Perfect for 9 yr old girl.

For the boy I would recommend the power of five series by Anthony Horowitz, really exciting stuff and again, all completely child friendly (I've read both of them as part my work requires me to read and assess kids books). The first book is Ravens Gate.

And finally if they are both Harry Potter fans, the books with Jo Rowling did for comic relief are due out again on the bookshops again soon, they're updated with extra info in them, they are: fantastic beasts and where to find them and quidditch through the ages. Both brilliant reads for HP fans.

If none of these appeal, Dorling Kindersley do the most amazing fact books, so worth looking at one of these on things like gadgets for the boy and animals for the girl.

Hope this helps! Well done for opting to buy books, much better than computer games to fire the imagination!
