my dd has just started having more 'grown up' books read to her at bedtime. we have just read matilda and the twits by roald dahl which she loved. I have tried reading my childhood favourites to her (enid blyton, my naughty little sister, milly molly mandy) she doesnt like these, i think they too dated. what great books have your children enjoyed?

My DD enjoyed all the animal ark books.

We got her a jaqueline Wilson one to read to her not really knowing the content but knowing they were popular ..... STEER CLEAR for a couple of years !!!

Anna Hibiscus by Atinuke, perhaps 6 plus for reading alone but ideal to read out loud to a 5 year old, also each chapter is a separate story which is always good for bedtime reads I find!

Of the more recent ones my dds enjoyed at 5, I'd suggest:

The worst witch series
Dick King-Smith Sophie series and animal stories.
Anne Fine (the ones for younger readers, she writes for various ages). e.g. Bill's new frock, Anneli the Art Hater, The same old story every year.
Jacqueline Wilson (ditto, some are Ok for this age, many aren't). Connie and the water babies, the Werepuppy, and Cliffhanger are fairly innocuous.
Horrid Henry, if you can bear him, most 5 year olds love him.

Mine also like the older classics.

I meant to add there, it's worth trying other older classics, Milly Molly Mandy and Naughty Little Sister are quite twee and dated, but other old favourites have dated less. Ones with less of the moralising and twee goody-two-shoes narrating.
