Does anyone have any good tips for a book present for a 9 year old boy. Good reader, keen on sport etc. Has read all the astrosaurs, dear max, etc series and not quite ready for harry potter but we need to find a new series to get stuck into!

Ds age 9 loves the Jiggy McCue series written by Michael Lawrence.
The first one is called Poltergoose, I think there are 10 in the series. (whilst it is not imperative to read them in the order they were published, some books do refer back to previous ones so it helps )

This is a great way of finding more obscure children's titles.

My ds is 10 but loved this spook and the good thing is , if he likes it there are a few so you can keep going. We'r ealways running out of books as ds reads so fast so will be looking at the ideas here too!

Some great books for boys written by Gordon Korman, a Canadian author. Great funny books about young teenage boys in a boarding school.

Bartimaeus triology also great for that age group.

Artemis Fowl
Percy Jackson
Young Bond
Skullduggery Pleasant (only 2 books so far, but sure there will be others)
Wolf Brother
How to tame a dragon etc (can't remember the first one but they're all very funny - author's Cressida Cowell)
anything by Diana Wynne Jones
Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series - getting old now but still excellent
The Hobbit

that should keep him going!

ds2 (9) and a voracious reader has recently devoured all the above

The beast quest books are really popular in this age group at the moment and are at a similar level to astrosaurs.

ds loves Erin Hunter's books about cats. There are loads of them too. He has read 12 so far, and gives us breakdowns of all the happenings at tea time. dd has just started to read them too. I have to say I've not been that impressed. Mimsmum list is excellent - I have lots of those

The Charlie Bone books by Jenny Nimmo got my 9 year old really reading to himself. He has devoured them.
