My nearly seven year old son has suddenly developed an interest in Chess. He discovered the existance of chess by finding as a game on a PC at the school I work at. He has also been playing chess on my Vista machine.

Can you recommend any books to teach him moves and strageries, that are accessible to a child with a reading age somewhere between seven and eight. My father in law does have books that he is prepared to learn, but the reading level is just too hard for my son.

Bit young for a chess reference book imo. My nearly 7 yr-old loves chess, and the best thing to help him is to play it with him. We play one match every evening (either dh or me)

The best possible thing you can get him is not a book but a copy of Chessmaster. It is a pc program. Nothing better as a tutorial. ds1 taught himself how to play with this program.

If he has basic understanding there are two books that are actually quite good and geared towards kids, but they are on how to improve game.

Both are by Murray Chandler:

One

Two

This is specifically geared towards children by same author but ds1 never read it. sounds good though
