What would be a good book for a 2 1/2 year old boy?

Would appreciate any recommendations, should I get one that mum & dad can read to him, is 2 1/2 a bit old for touchy-feely books or a bit too young for pop up books?

He is into cars, trucks, trains (esp Thomas), quite likes animals too.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

(out of touch - have a 10yo DD)

Lynley Dodd has written wonderful rhyming books about dogs ( Hairy McClairy) and cats (Slinky Malinki) among others, which are wonderful.

Click Clack Moo
The Snail and the Whale
Richard Scarrys Cars and Trucks and Things that Go
Room on the Broom
Apple Pear Orange Bear
Any Harry and the Dinosaurs (on offer at the Book People as a set)

All very popular with my 2 1/2 year old DS

The Gruffallo by Julia Donaldson

George and the Dragon (I think, about a mouse and a dragon)

My DC loved (and still love) the Puffin Book of First Poems

The Hairy Mclary books

You Choose. Can't remember who it is by, but on Amazon.

Really good book for chatting and having fun with books - just a series of 'where's Wally' type of pictures and they have to choose what they would do/have/prefer. Great fun.

There are some beautiful 'Big bear, little bear' books (don't worry, nothing like the sacharine 'Little Bear' TV programme) - things like 'Can't you sleep little bear' - we got a box set and cd for about £10 - beautiful pictures, nice stories.

We also like the Orchard Farm box set (also cheap through book club) - Ds (3.5) is starting to read the odd word now too - stories about a farm and the animals...

Dear Zoo - Rod Cambell (sp) DS also loves all the other books by this author...

Topsy and Tim go on a train/airplane

My 2.7 yo ds also loves the Ladybird read-it-yourself series. He loves to have the classics such as 3 little pigs, Peter and the Wolf etc.

You could try the Thomas/Bob etc annuals. DS1 had these last year and still loves to have them read to him now. They have lots of stories and a few activities in them.

My son loves the same stuff. We are loving "Can You See a Little Bear?"

It's got magical illustrations and my 2.4 year old finds something new to point out everytime he sees it. Great bedtime book as it ends with the little bear falling asleep. At the risk of sounding soppy, when I read it to him it feels like the kind of bedtime moments I imagined having when I had kids...

Oh, he also loves this:

Bill's Bulldozer

Our Dear Zoo has most of the flaps ripped off now! Probs gave it too early. Agree, great book.

"You Choose" - Its brilliant to get kids talking and you'll find loads of threads on here about it - lots of people have a love hate relationship with it because their little ones love it so much it makes bedtime really long!

Little Red TRain series - stories and words not that great but the illustrations are fab. Lots to look at - bit like Each Peach Pear Plum in some ways.
