Her birthday is coming up and she really wants some new books

Her favourite books recently have been

Anything by shirley hughes
The Winnie the witch books
Gruffalo books
Bear Hunt
Peace at last

I think if I have to read them again I may scream, have you got any really good ones that your DC love? She will sit for quite a while so not bothered if they are long.

TIA

My DD now 6 was (still is really) a big Shirley Hughes fan as well. She was (and stil is) NOT girly so most books she enjoyed at that age had boy protagonists. Some other books she enjoyed were Someone Bigger, Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs, Billy's Bucket and Ants in my Pants.

meant to say enjoyed at your DD's age and of course, spell still correctly.

ds is 3.5 and loves:
Tickle Me Too
Night Pirates
Don't put your finger in the Jelly, Nelly
K is for Kissing a Cool Kangaroo
Bright Stanley
Dora the Explorer stories
Tim, Ted and the Pirates
Commotion in the Ocean
Charlie and Lola books (special favourites)
Hairy McLary/Slinky Malinky etc
The Kiss that Missed

Without rootling through his bookshelf I can't remember any more, but he's asleep! Amazon are really good at categorising, you can search by age and a lot have reviews. Good luck!

Fairy tales are very popular in this house. It is quite hard to find 'suitable' ones I have found as some of them are really long and hard to understand. Nick Sharratt has some great ones. He has done the billy goats gruff, cinderella and goldilocks, and some more as well. Her favourite book is Rapunzel by John Kurtz. The story is quite east to follow.

Fancy Nancy
Blue Kangaroo(loves all of them)
the Nick Sharatt fairy tales(loves them all)
Hairy Mclarey(loves all of them)
You Choose(still reads it eeeeevery day)
The Bog Baby(just bought this and can't wait to read it to her it's brilliant)
The Tiger Who Came to Tea
Pass the Jam Jim
Lettice Rabbit(loves them all)
the Nick Sharatt Daisy books

I'd get some out from the library as it gives you a really good idea as to what will be a hit.

I would definitely second the blue kangaroo series, and Lynley Dodd's Slinky Malinki and Hairy McClairy books have wonderful language and rhymes. Book People have 6 HM books for £6.99 here

Have you tried any other jill Murphy books such as Whatever Next or the ones featuring the Large Family: A Quiet Night In, Five Minutes Peace, All in One Piece and Mr Large in Charge were all a big hit with dd (and me ). Book People have all 5 and CD for £6.99 here

Angelina Ballerina was also popular at this age.

agree about fairy tales

the ladybird ones very popular here - think they like the 'mini-ness' of them

also usborne first reading fairy stories, dd2 was obsessed wtih The Nutcracker at this age and they are lovely books, with a ribbon bookmark but still little (cost about a fiver iirc)

DD2 (3.5) is enjoying the Helen Cooper books ATM, especially Pumpkin Soup and Tatty Ratty.
Winnie the Witch series is also popular, as are many of the others already mentioned on this thread.

I second (or third or fourth!) The Hairy McClary and Co. books.
I tried to avoid princesses/pink/ballerinas but my mom bought them some books and they were Angelina Ballerina and Lettice the Bridesmaid. I have to read these over and over and over . . . .
For some bizarre reason dd1 is also crazy about Jeremy Fisher (none of the other Beatrix Potter)
At my moms house they both love some pig books by Mike Inkpen (I think)

agree with recommendation for Helen cooper books, esp. Tatty Ratty.

My boys loved the Richard Scarry books at that age esp. What do People do all day. they are a bit different to the others and quite interesting for adults too

Anyone got ideas for books about children with hearing loss, cochlear implants or hearing aids?

Agree with a lot of the recommendations on this thread and would like to add a special recommendation for That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell.

Incidentally my DD3 will be six next month and she still likes all her Helen Cooper books, particularly Pumpkin Soup and its sequels. The good stuff does run and run. Dogger is another that never seems to pall.
