Is this the enchanted wood?

Hi
My dd(5) told me this morning that their class reader is the Faraway Tree and that they were on Chapter3 and Bessie was making toffee. She was very excited telling me about Moonface and sliding down on pillows.
Does she mean the Enchanted wood as I thought that was the first in the series.

Sounds like they are reading The Magic Faraway Tree which is the second in the series. In The Enchanted Wood they don't actually meet any characters until round about chapter 4. Ask her if Cousin Rick (or Dick if they are reading the original!) has come to stay with them and if so it's definitely the second. Sounds like she is enjoying it

Chapter VII of the Enchanted Wood - Bessie makes some toffee for moon-face

this is because if you pay moonface in toffee he lets you slide down the slippery-slip on a cushion.

OMG RICK?
They changed his name?
I may have to read some of this to the Dc's soon, but I'm trying to remember to read them the rest of the white horse (my fave book as a child)

I know isn't it sad? They canged Fanny to Franny and Bessie to Beth! Also Dame Slap is now Dame Slap and no one is hit anymore. Was really disappointed when I read it to dd and am scouring charity shops for an original version.

why did she call them Fanny and Dick?

Now that's a question.. strangely enough it never occurred to me to ask my mum when she was reading it to me all those years ago!

I bought a copy of the trilogy in a cheap shop in bicester village, they have the normal names in that.
RRP was £9.99 but i think we paid £3.99 for it, I can always pop in tomorrow and see if they have one for you?

In the early 1900's fanny and dick were names, nothing more so I assume it was pretty innocent.

Right up till the 1980s, my cousin Frances was known to the whole family as Fanny. It didn't seem all that odd to us at the time

I note that she now calls herself "Fran"!

Thanks for the offer, that's really kind, but am going to dig through parents loft at next visit and see if they still have the copy I had as a child - though imagine my sister has probably beaten me to it!

Well, if you can't find it let me know, I'd expect they have it in stock quite a lot and I live nearby.

What a great book to be reading in school! Glad to hear it is still being used (albeit with silly name changes)

Listening to her chat it is defo the Enchanted Wood and they are at ch7 as they need to pay in toffees to go down the slide.
They are reading originals with Dick et al, she started reading with the Happy Ventures.

I've dug my copy of the Magic Faraway Tree out for her. Must admit I was impressed this was their class reader as the Ginn readers she brings home can be dull.
