DD is 6 and has thoroughly enjoyed the new Pippi Longstocking illustrated by Lauren Child.

Don't know about unusual, but what about Pippi Longstocking - one of my favourites from childhood. Lauren Child (I think - the Charlie and Lola woman) - has just done an illustrated hardback version. although you can't beat the originals in my opinion!

Can you catch a Mermaid by Jane Ray - fabulous story and exquisite illustrations. I have got it for loads of girls' presents after I chanced upon it in waterstone's one day and got it for dd1.

Not new stories - newly illustrated.

Do you want classic or modern? I have 7 and 6 year old dds and they enjoy all sorts. On the classics what about Heidi, or other Astrid Lindgren (besides Pippi, which I persist in preferring in the older version). The Bullerby children are fun.

Or Philippa Pearce the battle of bubble and squeak.
Olga da polga
Heidi
E Nesbitt is surprisingly popular with my 6 year old
Noel Streatfield (Ballet Shoes is my favourite and not too complex)

Or modern stuff, my dds like Jacqueline Wilson, Anne Fine, Horrid Henry.

dd2 is currently enjoying a Sea Horses quartet by Louise Cooper. It's an adventure story with ponies, magic, etc.

thanks, all!

I have a nearly-six dd and she has most of the above books but I am not sure if other 6yos would like them.

but, obviously, they would!

was thinking of Narnia set but although it is affordable on Book People its rrp is 50 odd quid, so may look a bit madly generous for a school friend!

hmmm, thinking Pippi Longstocking, dd loves hers....

Michael Morpurgo e.g. The amazing story of Adolphus Tips.
