A good history book for DD (8)

DD is about to be 8. She has said she would like a book (or books) about history for her birthday. She has lots of Horrible Histories, so was thinking of something different. She is a confident reader. Can anyone suggest anything? It would be her present from me and DH so could do with being a bit special really. (We were going to get her a camera but someone has kindly given her one they no longer need...)

This is good, and about right moving on from Horrible histories, I'd say. And being hardcover makes it a nice present, of course.

If you think she'd enjoy historical fiction how about something like The Tin Snail, mine really enjoyed it.
