What books are you buying for you're 8yo daughters birthday?

I need inspiration. DD1 is 7 and reading the secret seven series atm.

She is reading George's Marvellous Medicine to me (as we have no school book)

She is in desperate need of lots more books for her 8th birthday and Christmas.

So what are you buying?

The Bolds by Julian clary is really good, dd has just read it on holiday along with uncle gobb and the dread shed by Michael Rosen and the unlikely adventures of Mabel Jones.

Oh you should take a peek at Waffle Hearts, it is a beautiful book - inside and out - it was my 'go to' present last year. Quite special.

My almost 8yo dd is on book 3 of the How to Train your Dragon books. She also loves the Ottoline and Goth Girl books. She has also recently started on some Jacqueline Wilson, currently reading Queenie.

Oh and David Walliams, she's really enjoyed his books too.

DD has just turned 8 and has also devoured a lot of the classics. She's recently read Black Beauty, Stig Of The Dump, The Secret Garden, Tom's Midnight Garden, Wind In The Willows, Narnia etc recently. There are some beautiful boxsets of these books.

She's also devouring Anthony Horowitz, Neil Gaiman, Pratchett and lots of non-fiction about various things (archaeology, history, biology etc).

If you like discovering books that aren't necessarily by the big names, my 8yo absolutely loved Witchworld by Emma Fischel. Next one due imminently too - Witchmyth.

If she likes darker stuff (ie bad stuff can happen to good people), how about Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch is another my d is loving.

Caroline Lawrence's The Roman Mysteries are also fab - brilliant mix of history and child-led adventure. I love it when she gets into a series - makes finding the next book so much easier!

My DD is 8 and has recently enjoyed Hetty Feather ( J Wilson) and has asked for the rest of the series for Christmas.
At present she is reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (book 3) having charged through the first two.

Mallory Towers and Harry Potter are firm favourites with DD (7.5) - although have made her want to go to boarding school!

Sophie books by Dick King Smith were a hit. She's just discovered Nancy Drew but early days so don't have a review yet!

Another vote for David Walliams, DD (8 at Christmas) read all his published books in three weeks and is already asking for the next one for Christmas. The Little House on the Prairie books are well loved,and she's getting a Beano Annual for Christmas. Actually, she loves the Amulet series of graphic novels (so do I!) which is a bit more challenging than the Beano!
