Books for 8 year old DS

Can anyone recommend any books for 8yo DS please? He is a very good reader but it took us a while to get him to read for pleasure. He started with Beast Quest (read 72 of the things!) and has since read Mr Gum, Captain Underpants, How to Train Your Dragon, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Astrosaurs, Spy Pups and some Jeremy Strong although he didn't like the 100 Mile An Hour Dog ones.

DD loves reading and has got Roald Dahl, Michael Morpurgo, David Walliams, Famous Five, Secret Seven etc but DS won't read them. I think it's because he see's them as DD's books and not his. We've read Harry Potter together.

He's read a few football books (Frank Lampard ones and a few others) but they seem quite young for him and he enjoys Horrid Henry books from the school library but I'm not so keen on these.

I've tried taking him to the library but he tends to pick familiar books that he's already read. I want to do an on-line order today and would be grateful for any suggestions.

Does he like Dr Who? My DH has bought our DS2 (9) some secondhand Dr Who books, remembering how he loved them at the same age, and DS is really enjoying them. He's a very good reader and has read through most of those books you mention, but he'd hit a brick wall and was stuck re-reading old favourites. I'm not sniffy about what books he reads - I think it's just good to keep reading for pleasure - but actually the novels are well written and very exciting. They are written by the old scriptwriters for Dr Who, such as Terrance Dicks. DH specifically chose the old ones because they are less scary than the newer ones (my DS is easily scared).

I can ask DS for a recommendation if you like.

After finishing Diary of a Wimpy kid, beast quest and some of the others you have mentioned my son (8) has enjoyed the following:

We discovered most of these through the library though, maybe you could go and he could try out different genres to see what he likes.

DS2 recommends 'Doctor Who and the Daleks' to get into the series.

He also recommends the Tom Gates books, starting with 'The Brilliant World of Tom Gates'.

My 8 yr old Ds is only just getting in to reading for pleasure - huge relief! We have been recommended Captain Underpants to read next.

My 8yo ds likes old fashioned stories.

Cue for Treason

That sort of thing.

But his general choice for reading to himself is fact. So he has "The Spitfire Story", "HIstory of Tanks" "Evacuation" that sort of thing.
