Books for DS 10 yrs - faction books, any suggestions?

My DS, 10, seems to prefer factual books rather than fiction but I would like him to read novels to develop his vocabulary and awareness of narrative.

He liked Malorie Blackman, Hackers and Gadgetman, and he reads all the horrible histories and he also like the 'boy who biked the world'. However, he is not interested in Harry Potter, too supernatural, and he doesn't like dark novels like those of Charlie Higson.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

How about autobiographies?
I really enjoyed Ronald dhals as a child sort of Fact based but written like a story.
If he likes football there are some books that are sort of autobiographies of messi and ronaldo that are written like stories.

Thanks. He has read some of the Roald Dahl stories at school but I hadn't thought of his biography.

If he liked Horrible Histories, he might also like the Horrible Geography and Horrible Science series, which are in the same vane.

Could also try the My Story series. These are stories told from the point of view of a historical character, such as a soldier in the trenches in WW1, or Anne Boleyn's maid, so are made up but with a historical basis.

DD's friend hates fiction, particularly fantasy - he loved the Swallows and Amazons series.

My non-reader started with the Captain Underpants series.

He has since covered Alex Rider (a boy James Bond) and the Beast Quest books.

My son prefers non-fiction.

He enjoyed a graphic novel series called the Isabel Soto series. They're fictional mysteries based on real life history.

He is reading a funny book a the moment called The Extincts.

If he likes history, then Five Wounds might appeal to him. The historical detail is really wonderful, and it's not a topic that has been done to death - set during the Pilgrimage of Grace.
