For the sake of a more interesting discussion let's say except Ballet Shoes which I think most people are inclined to agree is far and away her best!

I'm rather partial to the Gemma series, and have a real soft spot for Dancing Shoes / Wintle's Wonders.

Anyone else?

I seem to remember liking Ballet Shoes for Anna and White Boots, but they pale next to Ballet Shoes, I can't remember much about White Boots at all.

I think its White Boots for me, along with the Whicharts, but I do have a soft spot for the Bell Family and the Growing Summer. So hard to choose!

Whicharts? Don't think I know that one?

White Boots is great isn't it, I've just reread it smile

I was going to say White Boots, too. smile

I've only read White Boots but loved it. I seem to remember the heroine had ginger hair so that might be why.

White Boots, without a doubt.

It's DD's favourite too.

Curtain Up (aka Theatre Shoes) is great too.

The Whicharts is one of her very first books, and written for adults. She uses the same story theme in Ballet Shoes, but in the Whicharts, the girls aren't abandoned, but are the result of their fathers affairs with his mistresses!

We love Ballet Shies and The Growing Summer.

Just about to start White Boots and The Painted Garden with DDs (aged 8 and 5).

Party Frock (apparently also known as Party Shoes, but it's about a frock really). I love all her books, though.

Apple Bough and Dancing Shoes. But there is really nothing like Ballet Shoes for a comfort read!!

Marcipex Sat 10-Jan-15 19:54:47

Painted Garden.
Because of the food! And American girls are allowed to try to look pretty!

Hakluyt Sat 10-Jan-15 19:55:49

The Painted Garden.

Enb76 Sat 10-Jan-15 19:56:24

The Painted Garden. I read it a couple of months after The Secret Garden and now can't unhook the two in my head.

BaffledSomeMore Sat 10-Jan-15 19:59:32

Vicarage Family was my favourite.

The Painted Garden.

The thing I don't like about The Painted Garden or Tennis Shoes is that only one girl is allowed to achieve. So the older girls in both books are allowed to be pretty and talented and the younger are constantly kept down until their natural talent shows and even then they must recognize the older sister as prettier and morally better somehow.

I loved the Gemma series. I so related to Ann with all her worries she tried to keep hidden.
