Any suggestions for a story to read to a Year 2/3 class?

I have volunteered to read to my daughter's Year 2/3 class next week, to share a story from my childhood. I would love to read The Velveteen Rabbit but don't think I'm quite brave enough as I doubt I would make it through to the end without crying! I was also thinking of a story from the Moomins, but some of the children might be a bit young for that, or possibly the first chapter of the Phoenix and the Carpet, although I would quite like to read a stand alone story rather than an excerpt.

If anyone has any suggestions for a story that a group of 6/7/8 years old would enjoy, I would love to hear them!

The Twits by Roald Dahl - has immediate appeal

The Grunts by Philip Ardagh is along a similar vein, equally entertaining

I think it's also still lovely to use picture books with this age group.
Jon Klassen's Extra Yarn is a bit longer and would suit.

There's also Oscar Wilde's The Selfish Giant.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. I had completely forgotten about Katie Morag - gorgeous illustrations too.

They may have done a topic on Katie Morag. It often crops up in Y2.
