Chapter books with colourful pictures to read to 5 year old DS

DS is nearly 6. He enjoys having stories read to him, loves factual books and is doing really well with his own reading.
He went through a phase a while ago of enjoying longer chapter books (Flat Stanley, lots of Roald Dahl, that kind of thing) but now he's back to only wanting picture books read to him. If I suggest anything without colourful pictures, he rejects it.

So, I'm looking for suggestions of books that are slightly longer than picture books but still with nice, colourful illustrations. Hopefully once he's enjoying these, he'll be more prepared to try listening to something without pictures!

The Barefoot Books 'Book of' series are lovely - fabulous pictures but much longer and more grown up stories than a typical picture book. There's books of Pirates, Knights and Princesses I think.

In fact, quite a few of the Barefoot books might be worth checking out - dd had this one when she was maybe 6 or so and again great illustrations.

This looks lovely though it does say age 8 and up!

Takver, those are perfect! We're vegetarian so I'm sure that DS would love the story about the vegetarian dragon!

Many thanks.

Janosch! English translations are available on Amazon. There are lots of "first reader" type books that might fit the bill too. Things like the Bananas series or Frog and Toad. Not sure if I can find links from my phone but will look tomorrow if it would help.

You could try the Lighthouse Keeper ones - they are longer picture story books, Paddington again is longer but still picture. or some of the early reader ones (bananas like Blueeyeshadow mentioned) have colour pictures in still but are longer (Julia Donaldson - Quick Brown Fox Cub, The Wrong Kind of Bark are just 2 I can think of). Usborne Young Reading series 1, 2 and 3 all have colour pictures I think.
