Favourites are gingerbread man, three little pigs, three bears. We've also got gruffalo.

Any suggestions? I'm particularly looking for modern ones that I might not find otherwise.

TIA

Brown bear, brown bear - Eric Carle
Also the very busy spider. Very repetitive but seem to appeal.
My 2.5 yo is currently obsessed with Meg and Mog series. We got a set of 10 v cheap from the book people.

I second the hairy maclary & slinky malinky ones by Lynley Dodd. Both my two love them & you can often get the sets on book people for tuppence. Also agree squash & squeeze, what the ladybird heard & smartest giant in town (you get to make up a tune for the song in this one!)

I'm not sure they meet your criteria, but Aliens Love Underpants and Giraffes Can't Dance are lovely for this age group.

Another vote for Monkey and me

Room on the broom was DD1s fav.
DD2 loved little tiger.

There are three one about not going to bed, one about not wanting a bath and one about him having a sibling.

I don't want to go to bed

Definitely Julia Donaldson - A Squash and a Squeeze, Monkey Puzzle - by far the best of her books in my opinion!

Duck in The Truck as previously mentioned

I'm Not Cute - Jonathan Allen

Where is the Green Sheep? - Mem Fox - a massive favourite with both my kids

Cock-a-Moo-Moo - Juliet Dallas-Conte

ben and bella in the big red bath. has lots of repetition and a kind of train like rhythm to it.

oh no sorry it's ben and bella in the big red train that has the train rhythm. both good tho.

My dd loves oh dear by rod Campbell

Bunny and Bee (lots of different ones-Noisy Night is the best) by Sam Williams:
"Here is a house, a house in a tree
The house is the home of Bunny and Bee"

"Cows in the kitchen" has been a surprise hit

"Fix-it Duck" is even better than "Duck in the Truck" in my opinion.

"That's not funny" - it's about poo, but even I think it's fun.

"There's an ouch in my pouch"

Anything by Julia Donaldson.

If you go walking in tiger wood
One bear falls out of bed
There's a dinosaur counting one (think its called 'stomp roar')

Have a look at the Book People or Red Door/Barn (??) Booksellers. They do amazing value packs of books that cost a fraction of the shops.

dragon stew is great, very funny and a wonderful rhyming story

I read two with ds today that made me think of this thread: the odd egg, by emily gravett, which is brilliant fun with beautiful, witty pictures, and a story with repetition

And the elephant and the bad baby, by raymond briggs (I think) funny story, lots of repetition and very memorable

PeasandCucumbers Sat 09-Mar-13 14:40:55

Was joining the thread to suggest Monkey and Me but obviously several people got there first smile

The Duck in the Truck... truly and utterly joyous for our DC when they were 3 and 2. We had to read it EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. for about 3 months.

The snail and the Whale. It rhymes and the pictures show the story.

My DD is just two and she loves lift the flap 'dear zoo' and doing all the animal noises.

mummybare Sat 09-Mar-13 15:44:59

I second The Snail and the Whale, Monkey Puzzle and A Squash and a Squeeze
Also Tiddler The Story-telling Fish, Stick Man

I also second Dragon Stew and Going on a Bear Hunt
Also The Bear in the Cave
