Books to help DS with friends

DS2 has just started reception and is having real problems socially. DS1 says he sees him playing with children etc and he loves school and is happy and progressing really well.

However, he regularly says he has no friends and often says if the person he is playing with plays with someone else he just plays by himself rather than play too.

He is very sensitive he started crying when he told me some older boys were calling him names and when I asked what he said , karate kid!

I am looking for some books that might help him understand that the children he does play with can be his friends. He had a very core group of friends at nursery which I think has made it harder.

All suggestions gratefully welcomed.

Hi MMMB. How about the Gotcha Smile by Rita Phillips Mitchell? It's about a little girl who starts school and struggles to make friends.

Perhaps a bit on the young side, but consider Norma No Friends (I've just checked and amazon have a hardback for 18p plus p&p).

Two little girls with no friends, sorry not boys, but lovely illustrations and a huge favourite in our house even though we didn't have friendship problems.

The bit where Norma doesn't know what to say to the other little girl, then blushes and says "I like your shoes" is beautiful.

Could you maybe invite someone from school round for tea one day a week?

Or organise some dinner and a play at your house on the weekend for a few hours?

I would definitely get him involved more with groups, have friends over etc.

Hope it passes quickly for him. My ds said he had to sit on the bench the other day as no one would play with him. It's heartbreaking. He has a lovely group of friends and it just happened that two of them were off and the other two wanted to play alone.
