Oh I really despise this book. The mum sneaking into her grown son's house? makes me feel physically unwell.

Can you imagine the daughter in law on MN? " AIBU to ask my MiL to stop coming into my bedroom at night to rock my DH...." BLEUGH!

Loads of people love it though Grin

That's actually made me laugh out loud!! Okay yes in reality it would be a tad creepy(!) but it's just so beautiful....the bit where the mama is dying (sobs)

i think this is pretty much the creepiest book in my house. i'd chuck it out, but it's dd's, and a gift.

i have promised dd that i will not stalk her when she grows up.

Nope, another one it creeps out.

I do say "I will love you forever" to DD every night before bed though.

I cry at the Velveteen Rabbit.

Is that the one Joey reads for Emma's birthday on friends? That's lovely but I've never seen it for sale :( must look on amazon

Dogger gets me every time and it did when I was a kid too!

Yup, it is mentioned in friends.

You need to be loved to be real. And it only happens when you are all worn and battered. Sniff, sniff.

I tell dh he is my velveteen rabbit and that I loved his fur off (he had hair when we met) Grin, the book makes me properly cry though.

So does That's Not My Cow! By Terry Prathett.

I can creep ds1 out by reciting "I'll love you forever, I'll love for always..."
He finds the book disturbing, as do I if it wasn't the only winding up weapon I have (he's 14 now, but never liked it since someone gave it him as a toddler)

I love it...well up every time I read it, and cried like an idiot when I was telling my friend about it because she hadn't heard of it!

Goodbye Mog.

Saw it in Waterstones & the cover was enough to bring on the tears (was very pregnant at the time), have read it since then (not to DS) & am welling up just thinking about it.

I went to the funeral of a friend's baby when DS was six weeks old. The baby being cremated was 2 days old. One of the readings was a passage from The Velveteen Rabbit, the part about becoming real. Whenever I have seen the book since, it has brought a tear to my eye. Last year DS chose it from the library. I was 30 wks pg and in floods as we checked it out.

I haven't seen this book, but it sounds horribly sentimental and creepy to me.

Black Beauty though, yes, haven't read it since I was a child but don't dare pick it up. Buckets of tears.

I read Charlotte's web when I was 7 and was inconsolable, I bought it for my nieces birthday when I was an adult and was inconsolable all over again - I can't believe someone would write something so heart-achingly sad for a children's book!
