Forgive me if you already know all these, but if you don't I reckon most 7 y/os would like:

Astrosaurs and Astrosaurs Academy (latter slightly simpler stories)
Captain Underpants
How to Train your Dragon series

I'd be quite happy reading all the above out loud (I refuse to read books I don't like )

Pirates is a collection of pirate adventure stories, I think you can get a CD with it.

Did know about Captain Underpants as I've bought some years ago for my Godson. Didn't know about the rest though to thanks for all the suggestions so far.

The Jack Stalwart ones are good for that sort of age to read by themselves or with help.

Or there are lots of classic Michael Morpurgo or Dick King-Smith ones suitable for that age - my DCs particularly liked The Hodgeheg, the Invisible Dog, and George Speaks, but there are loads to choose from.

I am trying to find a thread from a month or so ago where someone recommended Jake Cake for 7 yo boys. I want to thank her from the bottom of my heart!

We had reached an impasse with DS and I couldn't find any books to engage him.

The Jake Cake series has switched him right back on, to the point where he is now reading them on his own. He's read nearly a whole book today. This is big news for us!

So I recommend Jake Cake! Author is Michael Broad.

Dinosaur cove series by rex stone. I got bored eventually reading astrosaurs, but dino cove is great. Enid blyton's secret seven stories, dirty bertie, beast quest (not looked at latter but recommended by a friend)

He has just had the Hodgeheg as his reading book from school and seems to have a lot of Dick King Smith books so will probably avoid those ones as presents, good books though.

My DS (7) really enjoyed two Vampire School books by Peter Bently that came out last year - Casketball Capers and Ghoul Trip. They're all about a primary school for vampires. V funny and silly and not at all scary.:)

Ds loves the Beast Quest books.

My son is nearly 7 too. He likes most of the ones already mentioned (Horrid Henry, Hodgeheg , How to Train Your Dragon etc).

He likes the Oliver Moon series ( think junior Harry Potter). He could easily read this himself - but we often end up taking turns

We also read a lot of non fiction. Horrible Histories is a favourite.

My son loved Beast Quest by Adam Blade at seven. Now eight he reads cptain underpants, astrosaurs, how to train your dragon, deadly 60, and diary of a wimpy kid (bit old for your son yet).

There is a series of books by author Mary Calhoun about a cat with attitude called Henry and his relationship with his people -- Henry the Sailor Cat, Cross Country Cat, Blue Ribbon Henry, Henry the Christmas Cat, Hot Air Henry are a few titles that appealed to all my DCs at this age. Quirky stories and lovely illustrations.

Don't know if the books of Geoffrey Trease are out of print now, but I really enjoyed them from age 7 to about 10. They are children's historical novels.

Magic Treehouse books. DS can't seem to sustain interest in a purely fiction book, but he likes these for their mix of fiction/non-fiction.

My twins boys, age 8 have loved the Asterix comic books for a few years. They start out just looking at the very funny pictures and then move on to reading them. I enjoy them myself! If you want to try, start with the first one Asterix the Gaul. You can pretend they're educational too!!

The 'Nicholas' series by Goscinny (Asterix author) and Sempe is about a group of boys in France probably a good few decades ago. There's quiet humour, situational comedy and in-jokes; the English translation by Phaidon Press is really good. The books lost nothing of their charm on their cross-channel trip.
