Fantastic, imaginative, gripping adventure for ages 6-12 (reading to my 6 yr old, some of it passed him by, my 8 yr old was totally engrossed). Full of subtle messages about belonging, being an outsider, differences. Also pirates, flying ships,a wooden boy & girl, champion giant hedgehogs, slavery...

All the Mr Gum series.

All the Moomin Valley series.

The Phantom Tollbooth.

3 DDs, now 9, 6 and 2.

To read to them - anything by Julia Donaldson/Alex Scheffler; Charlie and Lola; pop-up and lift-the-flaps; Mr. Men; Ladybird "Classics" eg. cinderella, elves and shoemaker.

To read to themselves - Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, Jacqueline Wilson, Mr. Gum, Terry Deary.

Trouble is that favourites change so fast, but there a few stand out mostly 'modern' books that I'd pick out (ie ignoring well known classics). DD is now 8, but some of these are from a little while ago

Milly Molly Mandy I read her 1 story from a collection book from the library & she is hooked; I need to get some more, not sure I can face the surprise party again!
Classic fairy tales, rapunzel, cinderella, 3 billy goats gruff etc.

I am going to try her with the Faraway tree after Shrimp's suggestion.

DD2 (18 months) loves anything with animals -especially cats in

this Incy wincy spider book; I wasn't that keen when dd1 was first given it but it is beautifully written in rhyme & has really grown on me, it is definately my favourite.
