Ok - I started work properly as a Nanny 3 weeks ago and didn't go in today as up all night with D & V, doubled up on bathroom floor etc - I never don't go in, was previously a teacher and know the problems it causes in school etc - had to get DH to stay home to look after DD (who normally comes to work with me) - I would never have not gone in if I had been well enough to look after DD. Anyhow planning on going in tomorrow even if not 100% as well that is what I feel is best, have talked to boss about her chn getting it but as my DD seems ok she is happy for me to go in. Obviously me not being in has caused problems today and I don't want it to happen again. Have been trying to make Nanny friends as someone suggested could cover for each other but FB is worried about numbers of chn etc - what do other people do? If my mum hadn't been training in Manchester she would have offered to cover for me (with her having to take holiday, so doens't seem very fair to me, so would never ask her to do that!)

I don't have anyone to cover for me if I'm ill. Guess that is a negative about employing a nanny.

yes, it's for your employer to sort out someone if you're ill. If our nanny was ill, then either DH or I would take holiday from work, or ask my Mum if she could have DS (although she already has him a couple of days a week so avoided asking her).

Our nanny was once in hospital for a week, and her sister very kindly offered to do a day for us. We paid her, and also paid our Nanny as usual whilst she was off. It helped that our Nanny's sister came round sometimes for coffee so DS already knew her quite well.

yes it is up to employers to find cover but i have a whole bunch of nanny friend and we all try to help each other if we can

some of us work part time and can work an extra day for a friend - ie i have got my friends charges on friday as she has a hoispital appointment

think it is give and take, my mb is more than happy for me to have a friends charge - have big car so can fit all in, and you never know she might need some help

and of course children know us anyway so easier than getting a temp in from agency

fairmum - do you not have any friends who can help

No no friends that can help at the moment, as I said I have only just started and just trying to meet people etc!

PLanning on going in tomorrow either way anyhow - do feel a lot better than I did last night (saying that wasn't ill until about 9pm!) and have just eaten some toast... not feeling great, but as I said much better - temp seems to have gone now too which is good!

some agencies have a ew "emergency nannies" on their books.

I too work as an emergency nanny from time to time. I am based in St Albans, Herts.

I mentioned this to FB that I was worried about giving bug to the chn and she said she was happy for me to go back today - luckly finish at 3.30 today as really didn't feel well! But all done now and hoping will feel right tomorrow!

lets hope your charge doesnt get S&D - for your sake as well as theirs!!

glad you are feeling better

regarding frinds - nannying can be very lonely so why not call some agencies and ask them to put you in touch with some nannies in your area

or look on www.nannyjob.co.uk and post up a post on the social board

where are you?

Hello I'll have a word with my friend as she was keen to meet up plus you both have children the same age. Sorry you've been poorly, hope you feel better soon x

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
