How far along where you when you had your first?

I'm 29+3 with my first child and keep getting told I'm more likely to go overdue. I'd rather not, as I'd really prefer not to be induced. I was just wondering what sorts of stages people on here were at when they went into labour with their first?

Honestly I was scared about induction, however my experience was very positive. Not all inductions are awful.

Induced at 40 weeks, born at 40+1 (well an hour and a half into the day so just fashionably late really!)

Induction was great...

37 weeks by official dates, just over 36 by ovulation testing and scan dates (as the difference was only a week they said not to change the official date). Everyone said first borns come late, plus I was measuring small and felt great - so hadn't started maternity leave and was totally unprepared!

DS1:

Contractions started on Wednesday (39+5), around 1 in every 30-60 minutes. Then on Friday (40 weeks) (contractions every 10 minutes at this point) I felt like something was seriously wrong as I wasn't feeling well, the midwives did a urine test and I had 4+signs of protein. Was rushed straight to hospital, where they saw I was 4cm dilated and having contractions every 5 minutes. They said as long as I was monitored, I could still have a normal delivery. DS1 was born the next day (40+1) at 19:10 smile

DS2:

From approx the beginning of week 39 I was having really bad headaches. Went in on the Saturday (39+4) and was given a blood test and urine test. Both found protein. Went back in on the Monday (39+6), had the same test again, and found twice as much protein. Was admitted to hospital to be induced. I was meant to be induced on Tuesday (Due date), except the labour ward was too busy. I also started having contractions on the Tuesday- about one every few hours. Wednesday comes (40+1), the labour ward is still too busy and my contractions are every hour. They are monitoring me and say my condition is still stable. That afternoon at 5pm they say I can now be induced- contractions are every 30 minutes. Before being induced (by braking my waters) they tell me I am already 4cm dilated smile They brake my waters at 6pm, and DS2 was born naturally at 02:01 on Thursday (40+2)

For both labours, I was only on gas and air until 10cm. I was standing up and walking around most of the time. When it was time to push with both babies they said my contractions were not fast enough so I had to have an epidural and a drip sad

40+15 with ds - induced (and both emcs).

Wouldn't recommend going to late, especially given that I was having evening contractions for a week before ds and therefore going slightly mad... My mindset is focused on going 2 weeks over with this one as clearly I cook 'em well! (Although The Vbac Discussion is still to be had).

DC1 - 41wks exactly: undiagnosed breech so that could have slowed things down a bit!

DC2 - 40wks exactly

Average for first labour is 40+3. That doesn't count as overdue, medically. "Post-mature" is 42w+.

DC1, waters broke at 40+4, induced at 40+5, born at 40+6.
DC2, due date.
DC3 --- tbc. He'll be "on time" from Sunday.

I don't see how you can predict whether you're going to be overdue at all by the way, despite what you've been told. I've heard it said that it is 'more likely' that a first baby will be late but it's hardly an exact science.

OhBabyLilyMunster Mon 07-Oct-13 13:56:11

I was told that the forty weeks is based on a 28 day cycle, so if you are a 31 day kinda girl you will have longer pregnancies.

Dd 1 - 38wks
Ds1 - 40 weeks
Ds2 - 41+6

Perhaps worth noting that by the time i had my last baby, my cycle had stretched out to 33 days. First baby it was 28 days.

39 wks with dc2 a couple of twinges then waters broke t 4 pm and dc2 born at 4.40ish, no one looked t the clock so don't have an exact time.

40+4 with dc3. Waters broke to induce labour at 11.50pm and he was born at 12.15am. Midwife was convinced the baby would come early but he had other ideas lol, the only reason I was in to get induced was cos my blood pressure had gone a bit mad at my check up the day before. I was 40+1 and visited the MW for a routine appointment. She asked me if I'd like a stretch and sweep, which I agreed to, but when she 'got there' for want of a better phrase, she told me to go home and rest because I was already 2-3cms dilated and DS was on his merry way.

I went into full labour the next day, and was holding him by tea time smile for a first time labour, it was all very fast as well. Take on board the stories on here of first time labours, but don't assume that'll be you. It took me 5 hrs 8 mins beginning to end.

oscarwilde Mon 07-Oct-13 17:00:02

39 weeks and 37 weeks on the nose. Looooonnng family history of everyone going 2 weeks overdue and having inductions so it was a surprise both times. Waters broke spontaneously. Baby was not engaged either time

Had induction drugs half way through labour with DC1 as dilation was not progressing despite strong contractions. The thing I didn't appreciate is that you can have a low dosage via a drip, and then it can be gradually increased if necessary. It's not simply a case of 0-100mph in one go. Midwife did recommend pain relief nonetheless and I had an epidural.

You can be induced via a gel/pessary I believe but I am not sure of the specifics which makes it more difficult to control the speed of the labour. Worth investigating it all with your midwife before someone asks you when it has all kicked off and you can't remember the ramifications of each drug choice

LadySnapcase Mon 07-Oct-13 17:41:59

37+1. In retrospect I think my body decided it was getting a bit risky to keep him in, my bp was climbing daily and various bits of me were horribly swollen. It was a 16 hour labour; would have been quicker but DS was back to back and stubborn, and needed a ventouse in the end...

The longer cycles theory surely just stems from the fact that due dates assume that you ovulate on day 14 (of a 28 day cycle). If you have longer cycles you ovulate after that, so your due date should therefore be the corresponding number of days later (so if you ovulate on day 15 when you're at 40+0 according to your due date, you're actually only 39+6).

Wouldn't have thought that works though if you have a 12wk scan (when the pregnancy is dated), only if you rely solely on dates.

I went into labour just before midnight on my due date. DD finally arrived 42hrs later. Not going to go into the details but it wasn't nice. I was induced and is was horrible. But all's well that ends well smile

I second (third?) what has been said about not having to be induced - I would have refused with ds had I not been going into labour every evening then having it stop overnight - the stress was worse than the wait! If you do get to that stage and want to go for it, though, I would really recommend asking if they have Propess - it's a new version of the standard pessary, longer-acting (I believe) and much more gentle. No bam-into-labour, it started as a natural labour would (I had experience of one spontaneous labour before this, not a conclusive study, I grant you!). But it did feel natural and I felt more comfortable with it as a method of inducing a Vbac trial. Just thought I'd mention it as not many people i know have heard of it.

Can I make a suggestion for the end of pregnancy? Make plans, lots and lots of plans for weeks 39-42. Meet friends, books you want to read, films you want to see, catch up with family - whatever. Have something planned for every single day. That way if you're 'overdue' then you have nice things to do, if you're early then you won't have the awful wait which is joy enough but you will have to cancel a whole host of social arrangements/time to yourself enjoying things smile

williaminajetfighter Mon 07-Oct-13 21:31:19

38+4. My mom said her babies were all about 2 weeks early as well.

Am 35+4 right now and hoping baby is up for an early departure!!!

hazchem Mon 07-Oct-13 21:32:29

I was 40 +10 ish.
I would have refused and an induction on the grounds that 42 is the end of the due period and that over due isn't really over due. Other countries say term is 38-43.

My main worry as my due date came and went was that I had family that were due to fly out and I was worried that they would miss seeing the baby. Next time I would ask for them to come at 41 weeks to take some pressure off.

Angloamerican Mon 07-Oct-13 21:35:05

DC1 - 41+5 (natural labour)
DC2 - induced at 40=2 due to size of baby. (Ultrasound indicated 11lb6. It was off but DC2 was 10lb.) I was induced with Pitocin (I'm not sure what the UK name is). It was absolutely brutal and I will do anything to avoid it with DC3.

WineIsMyMainVice Mon 07-Oct-13 21:35:31

40 + 12 and I was induced. And it was a really good birth. Induction isn't always awful! I had a really positive experience.

weaselinthenight Mon 07-Oct-13 21:38:25

2 days late, but induction isn't always bad! Admittedly my waters had already broken so my induction was more speeding things up than forcing them, but my labour was under 10 hours and did it all with simply hypnobirthing. Not being smug (I have to face another one shortly...) but just want to reassure you your fears may be over nothing!!

Zara1984 Mon 07-Oct-13 21:38:57

Induced at 40+1 due to hypertension, DS arrived in the early hours of 40+2

Breakneck speed labour once it started confused

BirdyBedtime Mon 07-Oct-13 21:39:16

DD was induced at 40+12 and took another 30 hours to arrive (plus syntoconin) but 'natural' birth
Went into labour with DS at 40+6 mid-afternoon after sweep in the morning. He was born just after 7am next day (strangely at almost exactly same time as DD)

IwishIwasmoreorganised Mon 07-Oct-13 21:40:56

Ds1 42 +5 and was induced (very easy to be honest)

Ds2 42 grin

ccsays Mon 07-Oct-13 21:41:48

Thanks for all your replies, I'm just reading them now as I've been on backshift all day. Nobody specific has told me I'll go overdue, I guess it just seems that there's a lot online saying you're more likely to go over. Also all stories you hear about inductions being much more painful and more likely to have instrumental delivery or a c section have made me feel a bit confused about it all.

Grumblelion Mon 07-Oct-13 21:42:08

Waters broke 40+6, had DD 40+7 (not induced)

mrsmooms Mon 07-Oct-13 21:45:21

DS 39+6 (19hr labour as he was back to back and got stuck)

DD 39+1 (12 hours from first twinges to birth)

fuckwittery Mon 07-Oct-13 21:46:41

OP, you don't have to have an induction, you can choose to have a scan and monitoring instead. AIMS do a really good booklet on this but you have to pay for it. www.aims.org.uk/pubs.htm#induction

Zara1984 Mon 07-Oct-13 21:50:13

Don't worry about it OP. My induction I guess was ok from an outsiders perspective because I only needed 2 doses of the prostin gel. When my waters broke it was like a rollercoaster - ouchy period pains to full-blown labour in about 3 seconds - and I went from 1-10cm in an hour! I don't know whether technically I had sort of like a natural labour because I didn't need the drip. I got DS out in 55 minutes of pushing, it was bloody hard work yes and hard to push with an epidural (very glad I got one though) - no ventouse or forceps though. I got him out with just a few mins to spare before they were going to get ventouse!!!

I bloody hope next time if my waters go at home it's not so errr Hollywood-style sudden howling pain! I was not expecting that!!

You don't know what it's going to be like. You'll be fine, however it ends up. Honestly.

Think of it this way... plenty of people go back for a second baby (or more!!)!!

AuntPittypat Mon 07-Oct-13 21:51:22

40+1 for me.

40w for me - ds was a textbook baby in all his scans, labour length, delivery, birth weight, feeding and sleeping grin. I am 20w pg with DC2 and he/she does not appear to be as co-operative already....

by 40+1 you won't care about induction if you do go over, you will just want baby OUT by any method possible grin

Zara1984 Mon 07-Oct-13 22:08:25

Yeah I was pretty anti-induction all throughout pregnancy. Then I got really bad hypertension and bleeding at 38 weeks and by my due date I was sobbing and begging for an induction or c-section. I couldn't handle the stress anymore of my body essentially going haywire from high blood pressure!!!

But defo agree with asking for continuous monitoring and going to 43 weeks (if you want to) if they're just trying to induce you cos of their overdue policy/if their EDD calculations are inaccurate.

Really really really hoping not to have an induction next time

All swings and roundabouts, each time hoped to go a bit longer to get some rest after finishing work. With DS2 hadn't finished work and needed to go back when he was a week old to sort desk, bring personal stuff home.

ChrisTheSheep Mon 07-Oct-13 22:40:39

Labour started 37+1 (natural/spontaneous). DS finally born 37+4, by which point I thought I was about to die. Beat the planned induction by just over a week, though!

ChrisTheSheep Mon 07-Oct-13 22:43:35

My mum tells me I was induced when she was 40 wks exactly (apparently it was the hospital's policy): she says I took 8 hours start to finish, and it really wasn't that bad: small episiotomy but no other interventions, G&A only. I guess not all inductions are dreadful hopeful emoticon

ChrisTheSheep Mon 07-Oct-13 22:44:58

[hopeful emoticon fail]

VeloWoman Mon 07-Oct-13 22:53:49

40 +? I dunno! After the third kid it all gets a bit blurry I think she was a week overdue. Sort of induced by the DR jabbing my cervix during an antinatal appoint.
40 + ???? nope! I don't have a clue. It was quite soon after her due date though. hmm induced (I begged)

InternationalMuslinMountain Tue 08-Oct-13 02:14:47

40+13 following induction at
40+12.

Like you I was really not keen on the idea of induction, however by the time it becomes something that you need to seriously consider you may well be so fed up and uncomfortable that you are desperate for bubs to put in an appearance!

My induction was not bad at all. I did have an instrumental delivery (forceps) but there were other factors at play that contributed to that more than the fact that I was induced (back to back baby who was BIG given the size of me). I had one prostin and flew into labour fast. Was managing fine with gas and air and only had spinal because we moved to the operating theatre for forceps, so although I can't compare how painful it is to a spontaneous labour, I would say it doesn't necessarily follow that it will be more painful. Pain is a very subjective thing IMO. DS was delivered 10 hours after induction started so it wasn't long in my case either.

As others have pointed out, you don't have to be induced. The trip to hospital for reduced movements the day before my induction was booked sealed the deal for me though...

Weegiemum Tue 08-Oct-13 02:28:38

39+4 with dd1 (at 9lb12 I was glad she was out, was a back labour and ended up in ventouse delivery).

38+4 with ds (simple vaginal delivery, no probs), at 10 days early he was still 9lb3!

(Both spontaneous labours)

Then dd2 was induced at 36+6 as the pregnancy was making me very ill (kidney problems). Again a simple delivery, but even at the very bottom end of term she was 7lb15 - I'm a teeny bit glad they induced!!

I've never gone past my due date, which drives many of my friends to feel a bit envy

bunnygirl80 Tue 08-Oct-13 02:44:05

Ds was 38+6. Spontaneous labour, and it was something of a surprise as I'd been convinced by everyone's comments that first babies always arrive after edd

Dd was an elcs at 38wks exactly because she was in an unstable position and moving between transverse and footling breech. I was already having irregular contractions by that stage so I doubt she'd have stayed in much longer

I'm quite glad I've never still been pg on my due date, I was fed up and uncomfortable enough as it was!

Both induced (DC1 with the drip, DC2 by ARM). It was fine.

This time around I have no idea. I'm 27+2 and the moment and been warned that I could go into preterm labour at any time. I have a scan booked for 36 weeks when they'll tell me if I have to have a CS or not. So no idea what'll happen!

Induced at 40+12, DS arrived at 40+13 by EMCS.
In hindsight I should have refused induction for a further few days but by then I was desperate to get him out

Induced at 40+3 due to pre-eclampsia; DD born early hours of 40+4.

Were I to be induced again I'd outright refuse ARM; it hurt like nothing I can describe and did absolutely bugger all.

(interestingly, DD was the only baby in our NCT group of 6 who was 'late'! All firstborns - all the others were spontaneous labour and were either early or on due date)

WillYouDoTheMonsterMash Tue 08-Oct-13 10:22:06

Went into labour at 38 + 6, induced at 39w for gestational diabetes and DS born at 39 + 1.

I'd probably refuse induction for a little longer next time as long as placenta/growth scans are all okay.

Both times waters broke and labour began spontaneously, both children weighed the same. By 9pm I was in labour and saw the same consultant when I returned to the hospital! The baby arrived at 1am after a four hour labour.

'I'd rather not, as I'd really prefer not to be induced.'

You don't have to be induced.

jammiedonut Tue 08-Oct-13 12:07:30

Two days early, gave birth one day early. My sister was a week early with her first and a fortnight early with her second. You could be lucky. I prayed I wouldn't go overdue, three hours into 23 hour labour and I was begging for them to stop it and let me stay pregnant forever!

IdaClair Tue 08-Oct-13 12:31:55

40+17 but I was not induced.

PrincessYoni Tue 08-Oct-13 12:40:39

Bang on 40 + 0 but had been in labour the 3 days before and had syntocinol the night before to try (and fail) to regularise contractions. Induction can sound scary but its not necessarily full on syntocinol drip right from the get go. I got an epidural at the synto stage as I knew synthetic contractions would be very different and my midwife advised that as I'd been in labour so long, the epidural would give me a break (still didn't sleep though).

ksrwr Tue 08-Oct-13 12:51:58

42 weeks exactly, wasn't induced, my mum was 2 weeks late with me and my siblings so i had a feeling that i'd be 42 weeks, and i was. i was about to go in for induction when it all started anyway, and happened very quickly in the end.

ChocChaffinch Tue 08-Oct-13 13:33:38

40+11 and was induced. Not great. Straight on the drip.
in France though, don't they have a 42 week gestation?

peachypips Tue 08-Oct-13 13:38:05

DS1: 41+1 and emcs.
DS2: 38+5 and vbac.

GrandPoohBah Tue 08-Oct-13 14:16:47

I was induced at 38+4 as I had developed preeclampsia. One round of gel, my waters went spontaneously and I had DD 12 hours later (no drip). It was a bit more medicalised than I'd hoped for but overall a very positive experience - and not bad at all, which I had been led to believe induced labours could be.

StormBird Tue 08-Oct-13 14:27:14

DS: 41+3 - it ended in Ventous as he was 10lb 4oz and 59cm long. I just couldn;t get him out on my own.
DD: Still pending...........34 weeks and I'm bored now. I really don't want to go overdue so I'm hoping that it's true that the 2nd is quicker and easier.

thursdaysgirls Tue 08-Oct-13 14:29:51

DS1: 39+3 - labour was long, birth was traumatic. Forceps with no pain relief, not even gas and air. Left me with PNP and PTSD.

Anyway, I was daft enough to have more kids.

DD1 - Induced at 36+3 due to complications. Nothing really happened, they broke my waters at 6pm, she was born at 7:34pm. 94 mins of bad pain and then she was born.

DD2 - 39+3 - Mild contractions for 6 hours, nothing more than bad period pains. Waters broke at 1am, she was born at 1:40am - so 40 mins of baad pain then she was here.

With my girls I didnt get chance to register the pain before I was holding them, I was super lucky. My first was a nightmare which I dont like to discuss. But it just goes to show not all labours are the same.

30 weeks exactly

grants1000 Tue 08-Oct-13 16:45:19

5 weeks early and 3 weeks early - my motto is be prepared about a month in advance, it you are late you only have a dusty bag of ready packed stuff to worry about, it you are early you have less stress!

I went to hospital with only my handbag with first DS and nothing else, but he was born and the midwives had spare everything so it was all good!

kalidasa Tue 08-Oct-13 16:57:25

39+5 according to the hospital, 38+6 according to me. (Still sure I was right as otherwise I conceived when at a conference without my husband . . . ) It was obvious it was coming though, things had been rumbling vaguely for a week or so by the time labour actually started.

qumquat Tue 08-Oct-13 17:11:42

In France they calculate EDD as 41 weeks rather than 40. I've adopted my 'French due date' and tell that to everyone, including myself. My hope is if I go over 40 weeks I'll get less frustrated and not think of it as a problem. My sister had her babies in France and both arrived bang on their 41 week due dates.

GreenShadow Tue 08-Oct-13 18:12:53

None of my 3 DC made it to 40 weeks and DC1 arrived the earliest at 38+5. The other 2 were just about 2 days early.

lirael Tue 08-Oct-13 19:00:20

36 weeks exactly. Waters broke 24 hours earlier but they held off inducing me because they didn't have a bed in the special care baby unit and less than 36 weeks was deemed premature.
DS2 was 38+4

Both babies were 6lb somethings.

dogindisguise Tue 08-Oct-13 19:18:16

BarberryRicePud Tue 08-Oct-13 20:29:32

40+13, not induced (my hospital do induction at term +14).

Dc2 they gave me an induction date for 40+12 due to not enough spaces on the date when I was 40+14. I refused to be induced early, said I'd happily wait til 40+15 and there was all sorts of fuss created! Held firm though and was given the 40+14 date. Of course, surprise surprise, went into natural labour at 40+13 again.

I apparently just gestate a bit longer!

Waters broke at 40+1, naturally. Birth 40+3. Although it's more common to be overdue with your first than with later pregnancies, remember that the vast majority even of first timers aren't induced. So the odds are in your favour.

Thewhingingdefective Tue 08-Oct-13 23:07:34

I was induced at 35+2 due to worsening pre eclampsia, but I think I was in early labour anyway. I was 3cm dilated and having regular but painless contractions. It was a twin pregnancy and I'd had Braxton Hicks/tightenings for weeks so didn't realise until I was examined and then told my babies were going to be delivered. Had my waters broken and labour progressed quickly.

I was superstitious about DC2 being born on that date and my C-section was schedule for week 39 with DC2. It had been my worst fear after a long, unpleasant labour and EMCS with DC1 to go into labour and not have time for a c-section with DC2 - but this is what happened and went wonderfully. I felt so empowered by having had a vaginal birth and no doubt the recovery was better.

I felt in both pregnancies that I would go early, don't know whey but I was pretty sure just as I knew I was pregnant both times before doing the earliest pregnancy test...Go with your instincts!
