How amazing is the human body?

I was in hospital last night, didn't get to the ward until about 3am so when I was woken by someone screaming at 5am I went pretty much back off to sleep.

There was an awful screaming of "Get it out! Get it out!" I thought, as did others, that someone wasn't coping well with labour. Having spent a long time in hospital last time I'm used to some of the screaming that goes on.

It turns out that it wasn't someone not coping with labour. Last night the woman was given a pethidine injection and went off to sleep. She woke up to find she had given birth in her sleep! She was wearing PJ bottoms and couldn't get them off, her screaming "Get it out!" was "get the baby out of my trousers!"

I just find it amazing that the human body can just take over without any input from the mother and just deliver the baby when it has to.

If she's a member here I hope she doesn't mind me telling this story.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat????

Say that again? Giving birth in her sleep????

Now why wasn't my labour like that? (4 days of no farkin sleep and constant contractions and a very sore pushing stage!)

Congrats to the PJ mummy!

Still hanging on, just the same as before (contractions but not dilating) but it slowed down on it's own a lot quicker and they didn't have to ship me across the country. Eachpeachpearmum, I completely blame you! "Have a boring week!"!!!

I think they're both OK they stayed on the ward, baby was 42 weeks but only 7lb 11oz. I don't think they knew how long baby had been there. Obviously pethidine is more potent for some women!

If she's on here or joins I think "PJmum" would be a fantastic user name!

LOL- I meant stay home, chill, read some mn....not sit around on a ward!

My experience of pethidine (not childbirth) was that yes- I probably could have done anything and not noticed- was ace stuff!

That is precisely how I thoughtone of my elder brothers had been born. He was a home birth and when my mum had talked about this, I imagined him appearing under the sheets and being discovered

Hey- you jinxed me back- have been iin hosp thurs and again fri!
Had a prolonged tachycardia thurs am, got taken to S/O A&E, kept in assessment all day. Went to BWH fri to check baby over- monitored for 30 mins...was having contractions every 3 mins....
I could feel them properly last night, but they have stopped now thank goodness.

I didn't tell you to have a boring week! You're just jealous

Have you had all the drugs or was you just monitored? I'm glad it's stopped now though. Will be interesting to report back on Monday! Do you think we might both get our VBAC's if we keep this up?

I just had to reread my OP because I still can't believe it! Everyone on the ward was talking about it but it's so surreal. No pethidine for me!

Well- I doubt I would give birth in my sleep! I have NO tolerance for pain even with pethidine, I'm sure I'd notice something extra in my pjs!

Didn't have drugs, as contractions were def NOT as strong as labour. Just very worrying- though probably a lot to do with the stress over tachycardia tbh.

I do find it weird how different medical personnel have differing attitudes to patients- at S/O they didn't seem to believe a word I said about anything until they confirmed it with tests (drs and nurses)... but the m/ws at BWH- didn't have a problem with anything I reported, even when I insisted I couldn't feel the contractions (cos I couldn't then) though they were obviously quite pronounced on the monitor. They were a couple of particularly nice m/w though

I've spent all day trying to get images of CS out of my brain! I don't think I could have wiped the needle out.
