my third birth was wonderful

i didnt want an epidural, first 2 births were induced, epidural, monitor, drip etc and i wanted no. 3 to be a water birth. got to hospital 3 hours after contractions started (i also wanted to stay at home as long as poss but dh insisted we go at this point) and decided i couldnt cope without an epidural as i was in way more pain than i had been at that point in 1 & 2. mw examined me and i was 9cm, suddenly all the pain wasnt so bad cos i knew i was so close! got in pool and just relaxed while the contractions pushed him out without me doing anything extra. fab fab fab

i think 3rd births are so much different from 1st births because you know what to expect and you can get a bit stroppier with people rather than doing what you are told. mine was no more painful than 1 & 2 (the bits i felt) but it came on faster than i expected, maybe thats why you have heard they hurt more. you will get through it, try not to panic

they cant give you pethidine without you agreeing, thats the great thing about experience - you know to say no! i didnt have any drugs with no.3 as i knew by that time they didnt help me. you now know you have the option of an epidural if you want it but you can try without if you dont. have you written a birth plan and discussed it with your partner? i know most birth plans go out of the window but if you knew your partner was sure what you wanted and would support you it would prob help.

I shall be having my 3rd in july/aug and have decided on a 25min labour with no contractions or tearing - what do you think of my chances?!?

well done for getting to 9cm on gas and air, I made it to 5cm with nothing and then my waters broke and that was me wanting everything

you can do this again, look how well you did the last time

First labour faffed about and complicated
second labour 3 hours from start to finish - too quick and v painful. 3rd labour 5 hours start to finish - a bit boring at the beginning, fast finish! The midwife said that it was classic to have slower 1st and 3rd labours and faster 2nd and 4th. Good luckxx
