I found the thread on TENA very interesting and would like to pose an additional question:

If you had pethidine first time around - did you use it second time around?

That should of course say TENS

I used pethidine the first time around (before having an epidural). It worked well but I didn't like the way it left me feeling completely out of it. The second time around I had just the epidural and felt much better.

they dont use pethidine where i had dd's, they use diamorphine and yes, i did use it again, although it was better cos i knew what to expect 2nd time around! 1st time was a bit scary cos i never really knew how it would feel.

i used gas and air and 1 shot of diamorph both times

I had pethidine with 1st baby, and also twice with 2nd! Wish I hadn't had 2nd injection 2nd time around as it was right before I started pushing, so baby was sicky and out of it and I was sick for ages after the birth.

What's the difference between pethidine and diamorphine? Had pethidine 1st time round and loved the way it made me feel all drowsy but it's not actually a pain killer, is it?

isnt it erm.....fromt he same family as morphine and heroin?

Assume so so should be a painkiller, no?

They're all form the same pharmacologic family related - opiate analgesics. They work by dissociating you from the pain rather than releiving the pain per se.

ALso has anyone heard on Neptid?

Thanks - I am becoming increasingly dissassaciated from my cognitive processes let alone typing and spelling.

I had pethidine first time but didn't really feel any effect. I didn't bother second time and just went with gas and air which I love and would like piped in at home

Definitely not. I had pethidine first time round and all it did was to send me to sleep between contractions, so each contraction woke me up, unprepared and in devastating pain. Never again!

Had pethadine as gas n air made me sick, didn't feel too out of it, and they wouldn't give me a 2nd injection as time to push, bugger , ouch etc have to say it did make the pushing seem a bit woozey, which can't have been a bad thing! and it certainly kicked in again with the champagne a bit later.....had just the one sip and put it straight down, most unlike me Would def use it again if req'd!
