Am 41+3 today. Going in for an induction in the morning. Will need the prostin gel according to the midwife. This is my second child. Just trying to get an idea of how long this is going to be. How painful as well.

Want to go in with eyes wide open!

DC1 - several attempts over several days. Had every method of pain relief going.

DC2 - (23 months later) 7 hours exactly. Managed with gas and air.

Best of luck for tomorrow.

Hi Typhoonsmum - take a book, it can take a while!! Mine didn't hurt when the midwives did the gel, it did hurt when stupid consultant with very short fingers had a good rummage around (sorry if TMI!) Do lots of walking about, hopping on your exercise ball, standing up, etc to try and help things along. Good luck, and enjoy meeting your new baby.

I think it varies and have heard that it can take a long time.

However, with me they induced me at 2.30pm in afternoon (which was a ridiculous time to do it) and my waters broke at about 10.15pm just after they had sent my husband home saying nothing would happen until the morning!

I wont go on as I had the childbirth from hell with DS1 - but I think it is supposed to be more painful.

I was induced with DS1 due to pre-eclampsia.

I had the gel put in at about 10pm, managed to get some sleep over night. In the morning, they checked me. I said that I was having strong Braxton Hicks and the consultant said that they were actually contractions. Anyway, broke my waters, put in drip and labour started in earnest. DS1 was born 5.5 hours later by ventouse. I had pre-eclampsia so that was probably why they hurried things along, but I dilated much quicker than they expected.

I know people, who've need 2 or 3 lots of gel to get the labour going, so it varies a lot.

HI Typhoonsmum - I was induced with DS1 - Had the gel at 4pm he was born by 11.30pm with just some gas and air towards the end. I am currently 40+4 with DS2 and waiting to see if he is going to put in an appearance without being induced. I have been trying to remember what my Bishops score was with DS1 when I went in but I remember that they were expecting it to take a couple of days they actually sent DH home at the end of visiting time as we didn't realise the pains I was having were established labour pains.

Good luck, mine was fab much better than my first spontaneous labour.

Was induced at 8.30pm, contractions started ay midnight, slept til 4am when I woke up I was 6cm, then ds was born at 10.30am.

So a marked improvement on 25 hours with dd

you'll be fine

It took 50 hours, during which time I had gas & air and an epidural. Eventually had an EMCS due to an anterior lip. It was a surreal experience but affected DP more than me. Afterwards he said "I'm never going through that again, please have a CS next time!" I think my experience is pretty unusual though as I was a bit of a celeb on the post-natal ward and got lots of lovely special treatment.

Both inductions started at 40+10

DS1 1st of lot of Prostin 10 a.m. 2nd dose 4 p.m. Regular contractions from 8 p.m. DS1 born 3:37 a.m. (gas&air, pethidine)

DS2 1st lot Prostin Wed 2 p.m. 2nd dose Thurs 10 a.m. 3rd dose 4 p.m. Woke up Fri at 2:30 a.m. with quite strong contractions. DS2 born 5:22 a.m. (gas&air)

I think that if you end up having to have waters broken or go on a drip, it is supposed to be more painful than a spontaneous labour (I didn't have either of these). But the prostin gel just ripens the cervix and doesn't make things more painful, as far as I know.

was indused at 41+4 Had Prostin gel at about 9pm Sunday night, started with contractions after about 2 hours - which midwife didnt take seriously, finally realised i was in labour at about 1 am, at which point it all went a little scewiff but it was alright on the night, ds was delivered with forceps just after 10am (waters were broken somewhere in the midst of this)

When the Prostin was administered, I was advised by the midwife that it would most probably take at least 3 doses.

Good luck, you'll be great. x

It is twenty to eight in the morning. Splodge hasn't made any appearance yet so in about 40 minutes I'm off to hospital. I'm on the ward next to the one I work on. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Don't want to be wondering around the hospital having contractions and running into people I work with but the staff priviledges will help.

DP has gone to work to sort out the staff and will come back when I phone him. He is working in Manchester tho and I am near Liverpool so will take him about an hour depending on traffic. A friend is doing her nurse training and is in lectures in the hospital so she will call in between them till DP gets there. DD has stayed with MIL the past three nights and although the peace has been lovely I do miss her. I want to give her a big cuddle.

Went in for induction on Friday morning. Was given first prostin at 11am and nothing happened. Had second dose at 5pm still nothing. Was to have a third dose in the morning. Was woken in the night by one of the other patients snoring. (Must have had a total of about 1hr 30 mins sleep due to her) Pains started at about 4am. Nothing very bad but they were there every ten minutes or so.
In the morning was examined and told that I didn't need the third prostin and could have my waters broken down on labour ward but they were busy and they'd ring when they were ready. In the meantime the contractions were getting more intense. At about 13.30 the midwife gave me gas and air. At 14.00 She examined me and said I was about 7 cm dilated and needed to go to labour ward. NOW! They got a wheelchair for me and took the gas and air off me while I was transferred downstairs. OMG the pain was so bad!!!!!!
James William was born at 14.50 on Saturday. He weighed 7lb 14oz.(Same weight as DD) I couldn't have any other pain relief as I was too far gone so I managed it on Gas and Air. No tears or episotomy. A couple of grazes that she stitched as they were opposite each other and would have stuck together. The whole process was 1hr and 20 mins.
Was moved back to the ward and my own private room (staff perks are great - even a newborn baby gave me more sleep than that other snoring woman.) Came home yesterday evening and spent most of today on the couch. James sleeps very well for a baby. I'm not expecting it to last tho.

induction with twins at 38 weeks cos so big

Thursday 29 March pessary in at 9am, nothing happening and 2nd one due in at 3pm but they were too busy. At 4.20pm dh popped in to check it was safe to bring DS in for a visit. Whilst he went to nursery to get him the midwife had a check. I was 2cm dialated but my cervix was at the back on me and off to the left!!

She said she was going to stretch it a bit and pull it forward. I nearly hit the ceiling ouch

4.40pm dh & ds came in and I suddenly felt in a lot of pain. Suggested that not good to stay and with that at 5.00pm my waters went. Dh dropped ds off at home with nan and came straight back to delivery.

A georgous anthetist (sp?) gave me an epidural (it was either that or general if a twin problem) which was fantastic - better than last time. 8.30pm she checked and I was 10cm and ready to push, Erin out at 2050hrs, which was quick.

While dh was cooing over a new daughter, a midwife & dr grabbed my stomach to stop twin 2 from turning and Jack out at 2109hrs.

hardly felt a thing
