Essex mums Queens, Romford or St Johns, Chelmsford?

Anyone have any advice on which to choose? Had DD1 at Harold Wood which has closed down and am halfway between other two - both journeys potentially a bit of a nightmare. Queens a new hospital but have heard staff are dreadful... Not heard anything too negative about St Johns but much older hospital.

I had DS at Queens and it was great. The midwife who delivered him was fabulous, and other staff were fine but I was only in for a short time and didn't really need much attention, so it may have been luck.

Other big advantage was that because it was new facilities were nice and it was very very clean (that was jan though).

Feel free to ask anything else you wish to know. No knowledge of St Johns I'm afraid.

dh used to work for Mid Essex hospital trust of which St johns was a part. I would have had dd2 there had we not moved to Aus. I did have a couple of appts there and dd1 spent time in the paediatric ward - staff seemed fabulous. I would have had no issues with having dd2 there - except that we emigrated. Woman who used to be head of midwifery - not sure if she is still there - brilliant. Have no complaints with any staff we dealt with from St Johns.

Why not visit and see how you feel about each one? I know st johns is an older hospital but it seemed fine.

I had my dd at St Johns last year and had a very good experience. It is older but I was well looked after. I agree you should try to visit both and see how you feel then.

I had my first child at HW in early 2005 and was really disappointed with the care I received. Was not looking forward to having to go to Queen's for my second (was born in May, is now 6 weeks), but was really pleased with the whole experience - staff were brilliant (esp as labour wasn't straightforward) and was spotlessly clean, both on labour ward and postnatal (Coral) ward.
