Do the midwives stay to do the newborn checks or do they come back and do them another day? normally in hospital they do them before you go home but I think the earliest they are allowed to do them is 4 hours after birth.

First time DH took her to the GP next morning. Second time mw came back. Was going to be that afternoon but for various reasons was actually the following morning. Smile

My MW had to stay with us for two hours after DS3 was born at home . I'm not sure what checks she did but then I'm not sure what checks were done on DS1 and DS2 in hospital! I know DS3 had to go to a clinic a few days later for the hearing test but did the same with DS1 (hospital birth) as he wouldn't comply.

Also had to drag newborn to bemused gp on day 2. Worst thing about home birth! Although the previous birth I think they had a specially qualified mW who came and did it at home... So much better!

Helio- I was in an overstretched bit of London when I (or rather, DH) had to go to the GP. In my new area, the community MW who had cared for me throughout the pregnancy did it. The reason for the delay was that she wasn't available that afternoon, I could have had it in the afternoon with someone else but he was my third and I was laid back about it.

It is shocking how much maternity services vary by area.

Yes I think mine was because it was new years eve between a Sunday and a public holiday so no one around and I was up against the deadline for new born checks. 48 or 72 hrs I forget.
Should have thought of sending dp on his own, think I was a not ready to be thatcfar away from the new one!

Midwife came back and did it the next day. I think it has to be a specialist midwife though?

MW stayed for two hours after birth and did some checks. MW then came back the day after and did the official check.

Community MW did it (delivering MW was the supervisor). Where I am in Merseyside all the community MWs are meant to be able to do them.

Hmmm I know my midwife did a few checks the day she was born and a health visitor came the next day to do some more!
