ELCS - when to bring up with midwife?

Hi,

8 weeks with #2 at the moment, and due my booking in appointment very soon. I had an emergency section with #1, and having thought long and hard about it the last couple of years, I'd like an elective section this time. When should it be brought up? I know it wouldn't be officially signed off on until much later, but should my wishes be put on record from day 1? If it makes any difference, pregnancy is likely to be consultant-led anyway, as it was last time by the end due to health issues which are highly likely to come up again.

Thanks.

You'll be referred to the consultant due to prev cs anyway, but yes, just let them know at booking

I'd mention it at booking. my midwife asked me if I thought about it and I said yes I wanted elcs. I had emcs with first and I'm 11 weeks with our second. when my 12 week scan app came through i also had an appointment about childbirth options to talk through what happened with emcs ( about 16 weeks) and then a consultant appointment about 22 weeks. may be slightly different elsewhere.

I discussed it with the midwife at my booking appointment

I discussed it straight at my booking appointment and then with the consultant at twenty seem appointment. I brought my notes and heavily annoyed copy of RCOG guidelines with me so consultant was satisfied that I had done my homework so was happy to approve my request and book an appointmentappointment there and then

Thanks for the replies, I'll mention it as soon as possible. I'm vaguely familiar with the guidelines around birth choices, but I'll brush up before I go.

Yeah just keep mentioning it. If mw are dismissive don't worry as you'll get to have a proper chat about it later on I had a consultant appointment at 30 weeks who said it was fine then booked it in at 36 weeks.

I thought if you had a previous section then you can have another no problem? As in you don't need to persuade anyone.. That's what NICE says isn't it?

Yeah mention it at booking in. I had an Emcs first time and want an elcs this time. My trust is v pro vbac and they asked me at booking in what I wanted to do and I said i wasn't sure yet.

I'd decided by 16 weeks and so told my midwife then and she's referred me to consultant midwife to discuss. Got that appt this week and I'm presuming she's going to try to convince me to have a vbac!

I'm sticking to my guns though, we'll see how easy it is!!
