Advice for if second baby is premature....

Hi, have been told I'm likely to have a prem baby again.
I'm really worried about my dd (6). I stayed in hospital for 9 days with her, but she was our first. She's getting upset at the thought of me staying in hospital this time round.
Fingers crossed I'll be able to gone home after a few days, but if baby2 has to stay in, how have you all coped pleased?
Any advice?
Thanks.

I've just been through this. I have ds aged 3 and dd was born just before Christmas 6 weeks early. I was very poorly and in hospital for 2 weeks over Christmas but I got discharged about a week before dd who was in nicu (she developed an infection after birth). Ds coped, he missed me yes, but Dh was fab and brought him in most days for visits. It helped for him to have a couple of days off visiting though and just have regular fun days as hospitals are boring for children. When I had been discharged, we still went in daily to see dd and again sometimes would leave ds with family as it got really boring for him.
I'm not going to lie, it was not an easy time but we have come out the other side, both dc are fine and it had the bonus of ds and Dh becoming even closer.

Good luck.

By the way, in order to get dd home, I went back into hospital as a non potent to spend a couple of days onto a transitional care ward in order to get feeding established (she had been tube fed in nicu). I just explained to ds that I was going to hospital to bring dd home and it might take a couple of days. He wasn't over the moon but he coped well.

Thank you - that's reassuring. I'm glad you're all home now.

I know it should only be a matter of weeks, but I'm dreading everything about it!

What would be your reason for being likely to have a prem baby again? I had DS1 at 33+5 due to an abruption. He stayed in hospital for about 4 weeks. DS2 however had no complications and went full term. Now pregnant with DS3 and I have a low placenta and have had bleeding so concerned about potential of premmie again.... DH is able to stay home for prob about a week but would most likely be getting my mom to come stay if need to be in hospital for extended period.

When DS1 was in hospital I only stayed with him for about 5 days and after that just went in daily, which could be an option for you - you could go in as day visitor while your dd is at school potentially?

I have a bicornate uterus, so it's unlikely that I can carry to full-term. I also have some high blood results which are indicating a small baby and premature birth. Plus my waters went at 10 weeks, but that's another story!

I'm more concerned about my DD than me really - I know she will find me being in hospital really hard.

Being a day visitor for baby2 will be ok - but I know I'll want to be with them all the time too.
