I am due to have my first baby there later this year and have heard some horror stories from years ago. Has anyone any more recent experience? Thanks! x

here is the summary from last year

www.nhs.uk/Services/hospitals/Services/Service/DefaultView.aspx?id=208628

and on the right hand side the most recent comments from people who have had experiences there.

it's a while since my children were born but these horror stories do seem to stick around and yet most people's experience locally seems to be ok.

hope this reassures you

I had my children there 6 and 3 years ago and was perfectly happy with everything. They were busy in the ward afterwards especially as some people seemed to buzz for a nurse/midwife every 5 minutes or so (I've no idea why). If I was having a third I would be happy to go there again.
I think they have just opened a new birthing area too which has had good reviews.

I had my ds there 3 years ago and had a really good experience.i had read some horrors and was worried. I returned 5 wks ago to have my dd. I had her in the new abbey birthing centre and it was amazing. I had a water birth and was home 6 hours after having her. We were the only people in all night. The care and attention was second to none, nothing was to much trouble. Lovely midwifes and amazing rooms. Highly recommended !

Ooh spud that is great to hear! I'm hoping to have our DC1 at the birthing centre in November but as it is so new there's little feedback apart from the midwives I see who all rave about it. The pics of it online look fab!

Its amazing moggle. The only thing I would say to you as a first timer is know exactly what you want with regards to birth plan/pain relief and make sure you ask for it. It's a good idea to brief OH as well. The midwifes really take a backseat and are led by you, which is fine for your second but would be a bit worrying for your first in my opinion. So read up on pros and cons of everything so you know what you want and ask for it ASAP.
I'm so pleased I went in there, I felt like I hadn't actually been to a hospital when we left ! Good luck :)

I'm giving birth there in December so thanks for posting this! I don't think I'm eligible for the new birthing centre, but it does look nice!

Hello! Just checking if any on this thread had a review of either the Labour Ward or the Birth Centre at St Peter's?
Specifically I'm wondering what pain relief you can have at the ABC - is it possible to get gas and air etc?
Thanks any thoughts greatly appreciated!

I found experience on labour ward/ Joan booker ward fine. The staff were responsive, and generally reassuring. Although my labour was only an hour and a half I didn't get to use anything other than gas and air, although I understand that they have lots of other pain relief. They spotted my dd s tongue tie and sorted it out that day. There were also lots of people to talk to about breast feeding. I decided to pay for a private room afterwards, which was worth it as the wardis very busy and noisey.
