If you had a 2nd degree tear at your 1st birth, what happened when you had DC2?

Tore again? The same or worse? Or no tears?

If there was a difference, why do you think this was?

2nd degree again, but "not as bad" despite it being a much bigger baby. Both were water births. I think the second time I was told when to stop pushing and pant, which I wasn't the first time.

i think the second time was better because i had a water birth

both babies were back to back - but my second turned in labour whereas the first didn't so was born star gazing - think that also made a difference

I had a 3rd degree tear with first. Epi with 2nd. No stitches with 3,4 or 5.

All back to back apart from first baby.

i had a small second degree tear at my first homebirth 21 months ago
only needed 2 stitches and they were optional but i opted for them.

I gave birth for the second time 6 days ago, and i have an extensive labial tear..... split side ways like a book and opened the whole entire way out
also a couple of first degree tears inside that they have left to heal naturally.

They wanted to transfer me to hospital for stitching, but at 3am with DD fast asleep in her bed, i begged for them to try and home, and they did.

A very different birth injury, nothing to do with the first.

The first was born very very quickly (I had 12 mins notice that baby was coming) my pool was too hot so was born on the sofa..... second had the pool already, but only had about 9mins warning that she was actually coming....

The one midwife who had made it has no idea how or why i tore like i did this time!

Second degree tear with first and second DC, second labour much much quicker, tried not to push when told not to but still tore.

1st, short labour, 2nd dg tear. Hospital.

2nd, longer labour, just a graze. Homebirth.

Both babies weighed the same. Same birthing position, delivered in very similar position etc.

In utter honesty I would say that after first baby I was not quite as tight as before. I don't see that as a negative.

Second degree tear with first birth (although was an internal one possibly connected with DSs forceps delivery)

Just a graze with DD. Wasn't an instrumental delivery and was overall better birth.

1st baby, 2 hr third stage..epesiotomy, which I was to drugged up with pethidine to realise I was having. 2nd baby very quick second stage , massive tearing and lost over a litre of blood.

Nothing really to add to conversation, but after 20 years, so good to actually talk about it!

Fast labour mainly standing up. Needed 2 stitches for a tiny tear. Much easier despite no pain relief.

Dc1 was 14 hours epidural lots of stitches etc etc. second much easier.

2nd degree with first baby, second baby I delivered standing up & very quick with no tears. So all fine

3rd degree first time. A few stitches the second time, nothing major. Much better and easier and quicker all round second time! Good luck op.

2nd degree first time, nothing at all second time, slight graze third time.

First birth was stranded-beetle position with evil bitch MW. Second and third nice gently HB, kneeling position. Think this helped!

I had 2nd degree tear with ds1 plus a cut (they cut across rather than down iyswim) and with ds2 they said I tore all along the same place.
Ds1 was forcep delivered in the end as I'd pushed for so long with no luck, contractions only lasted 20 seconds and he was back to back and diagonal.
Ds2 was a more natural birth, with gas and air.

2nd degree tear the first time, had stitches and was quite sore afterwards.

Second time I had a very slight tear, was asked if I wanted a stitch and turned it down. The day I had no pain whatsoever - didn't feel like I'd given birth at all!

First was induced, epidural, flat on back, 2nd degree tear and PPH.

Second I laboured standing up, used a TENS machine and gas and air, delivered kneeling and had a tiny graze, no stiches and hardly any blood loss.

Ned to add, first baby, flat on back, monitor on baby's head, unable to move around, she turned back to my back during early stage of labour.

second baby, gave birth on my hands and knees, I felt so much more in control, he appeared very quickly, but I felt I was coping..such a different experience of labour

3rd degree tear first time plus extensive follow up physio, scans, broken coccyx (which still hurts 4.5y on).

So dc1 bad 2nd degree tear that went up as well as down. With dc2 just a one way 2nd. Me was surprised it was a 2 nd again

I had 2nd degree tear first time, just grazing second time, although baby was half a pound smaller second time, that might have helped?

2nd degree tear with DC1, despite being a hippy dippy water birth.

Slight graze with DC2, following hospital induction and very speedy pushing stage. Bigger baby too!

Anecdotally, I think you are less likely to tear on number 2.

First time 2nd degree 3 stitches. Painful for weeks esp when peeing.

Second time a very small tear that healed without stitches. No pain, not even when peeing. Baby was over 1lb smaller though.

First DC 2nd degree tear, stitches and it was bloody painful for weeks later. Couldn't walk properly afterwards, and couldn't understand the people who could. Also thought I'd never be able to wee without pain again.

Second DC, no tear just a graze. Was walking fine, no pain when I went to the loo. It was amazing the difference in the way I felt.

Second DC was 12 and a 1/2oz smaller, and was a much quicker labour and without me really having to push iyswim. The placenta took more effort to get out than DD First was a long labour and a long second stage and I wasn't very good at pushing I think.

Hope that reassures you a little!
