How often is the midwife right?

I've just had my 39 week midwife appointment and she recons that the baby should be here by the end of the weekend. Last time they would have been more or less right had DS not got stuck! I'm feeling very twingy, loads of discharge and mucusy and the baby is almost fully engaged and a quite quiet...How often is the midwife right about the timing of the baby arriving?

Hi,
I would trust the midwife,my midwife was always spot on, sounds like a show you are experiencing! My baby arrived about two days after i had a show! Good luck.xxxx

Mine said at my 38 wk appointment that i would have had him by my 40 wk one, but I had him at 42, so not at all for me! However, sounds like you may be having a show so fingers crossed for you.

As a midwife of 24 yrs???I'm more often right than a random woman in the street but I have been very much out! Last week for example?..

No idea! But if baby's movements have changed, I'd get checked out.

First pg mw told me his head was engaged at 38 weeks. I had an emcs for a footling breech 3 data later. So, wrong there.

Second time, mw told me that I couldn't be more than a couple of cm dilated and the baby was fine. I was 10cm and DD's heart had stopped.

I don't really trust mws.

I also got told that at 38weeks and didn't have DS until 42 weeks. Sorry, probably not helpful! Hope all goes well for you.

Just a quick update! Baby is moving well and all is fine there, just very very low. Contractions are stop start so thing's are gearing up just not fast enough! Looks like the midwife might be just a couple of data early in her predictions after all...

I had my 38 week appt today (I'm 38+4) and midwife said the same, that I won't make my next appt, so very excited but trying not to get hopes up too much just in case. (I'll be 40+6 on my next appt). Had a bit of a dodgy wee sample though, so has been sent off for tests, fingers crossed everything is ok!
Merry Christmas everyone! Grin

Midwife told me that baby not engaged, or even right way round and not dropped.

Born 14 hours later.

To be fair mw didn't say he wouldn't be.

Not always right. Not in my case anyway.

My contractions started at 9pm. Midwife said I was only 1cm at 1am when we went in. She said I'd still be there at lunchtime, and did I want to go home. Luckily I chose to stay..... dd1 was born over 3 hours later, and was in my arms at 3.20 am Grin

Sometimes you jut know.

100% of the MWs I met were 100% wrong about when my babies arrived.

Except the one who looked at my fanjo and hit the alarms as the baby was on it's way out (I'd only just walked into the hospital).

I went for 37week check for my dc2. MW said i should see you next week, but i dont think I will. DD was born 2 days later.

So the midwife was so wrong! 3 days overdue now and absolutely no sign of anything starting. I need to find out how to book an ELCS for next week just in case nothing happens.

Honestly, none of my babies have ever been engaged even the day of the birth. Mine like the element of surprise I reckon.

Interestingly, last two babies came literally hours after I'd had a final call with a midwife to tell me she'd unbooked induction and cancelled consultant appointment. I reckon stress and worry keep my babies in.

OP, do you need/want an ELCS for being 1 week (+ 3 days) over?

That isn't particularly 'late' unless you/baby have any complications, no?

Report
RhubarbCrumbled · 01/01/2013 07:51

I had an Emcs last time so I'm not allowed to be induced. Two weeks over is next Friday so any time late next week is fine! I think i'll feel better knowing it's booked. In the meantime, there's acupuncture and a sweep to look forward to this week plus a lovely new years day walk by the beach!

Hope you had a relaxing (or maybe labour-starting!) walk. Good luck for however you have baby.
