Starting sertraline, side effects and so on?

DD is two months away from 15 and starting on 25mg of Sertraline tomorrow morning (so she can have it after breakfast), then working up. She's supposed to be going for three days with her best friend, another friend and her best friend's parents on holiday on Thursday afternoon- we paid a bit, it's been planned and looked forward to for ages but I think also she's worried about it a lot because she feels more pressured/less able to relax with friends and I think was half dreading it, half wanting to go.

What are the initial side effects you/your dc experienced? I've heard there can be nausea and I'm concerned about this, although we are two hours away by car (unless a horrible traffic jam on the motorway or something).

My almost 15 year old daughter started on 50mg of Setraline on Saturday. Having read the instructions on the packet as well as all the relevant threads on Mumsnet I assumed that the first few days would be really difficult. She's on day 4 now, and so far so good, she's had very few side affects. She said she felt a bit jittery on Saturday afternoon, and for the first couple of days she said she couldn't sleep at night. However, this is pretty much it, she hasn't had any stomach problems and definitely hasn't lost her appetite!

Can I ask why your dd has been prescribed Setraline? My dd currently has severe anxiety and OCD. She's starting CBT in a few days time, and we've been advised that the CBT might be more effective if she takes Setraline at the same time.

Best of luck to your daughter, hope she manages to enjoy her holiday with her friends.

Anxiety (which has caused depression). She has had CBT since last December and was referred to CAMHS in September, but the CBT hasn't helped tbh so far, her emotions have got worse since then, so hopefully sertraline gives her the space/ability for the CBT to be effective. Good luck with your DD! Picked it up today from the pharmacy, the list of side effects is fairly long, a lot of things I hadn't even considered like the grapefruit or sensitive skin in sunlight (although, tbf, none of that will affect her). Confused

DS (18) has been on Sertraline for a few months. He didn't have any side effects when he started - except suicidal thoughts off and on in the first few days. Although he says it wasn't like really wanting to kill himself. I think maybe knowing the drug is causing it makes it easier to cope with.
Sorry! Probably not what you wanted to hear but as well to be prepared.
