StorySenders Christmas Donations (New Books for Children in Refuges)

Here is the Christmas thread for a charitable venture I have set up called StorySenders. (This follows a hugely successful first appeal - inaugural thread here )

If you haven't read about StorySenders already - all is explained on this page of the fledging blog; here smile

Basically, people contribute funds which are then used to buy a new book for a child in need. All you have to do (if you'd like to contribute) is provide funds - the organisation, choosing, delivering etc is all done at our end. (Very similar to the charity Refuge who have the John Lewis Christmas list set up at this time of year?) all monies go towards the book rrp and - if we have enough funds - toy rrp. (E.g. a Gruffalo Book and a small teddy of the Gruffalo!)

The first donations have been in conjunction with Nickel who, as an independent shop owner, has been the supplier of the children's books/goods and met in person with our first recipients - a women's refuge in the South of England. The link to Nickel's site and StorySenders page can be found on today's (Wednesday 28 November) blog post.

Books from these Christmas donations will be going to women's refuges in both the North and South of England - I will write a bit more in another post but keep this OP short(ish!) for now smile

I donated first time round. As soon as I get my PayPal account sorted, I'll send through something for Xmas. This is such a good idea, well done everyone who is involved

This is such a great initiative, will sort out a donation this week. Thanks again for your inspiration xx

families and may - lovely to have you with us, thank you both for your support thanks thanks really, it's very much appreciated and every single contribution is another little boost to keep us going and adds another book to the coffers grin thank you.

It's great to see this fantastic projext is still running, and so successfully!

Sterling work to one and all.

Hello Norks. It's a great idea to keep popping in and bumping this thread.

Thanks for the advice about how to include a message IvanaNap. I will leave it if it's going to create extra work. I'm sure you and Nickel have enough to do already.

Oh, and bump smile

IvanaNapAfterChristmasDinner Tue 04-Dec-12 21:10:57

Good bumpage work all!

Just back from a couple of days with family. StorySenders was never far from my thoughts though, I may have drummed up a donation from a relative smile and have been to-ing and fro-ing lots of emails with refuges, North&South!

To those just finding us - please ask any questions you may have and post any queries here which helps bump too the more the merrier.

(Having said that, it's tricky getting the balance between keeping this manageable and relatively low-key while also letting people know we're here if they would like to contribute!)

A warm, grateful and big thank you to all who have helped so far this month, will update more in the coming week thanks thanks

Bright sunny day up North! Frosty though. Not great when your street is hilly hmm

Thank you both for bumps! And if anyone is au fait with the Facebook malarky, do feel free to 'recommend' this Christmas StorySenders thread at the top of the page smile

About another week for people to contribute Sand smile

I have just updated the blog with a picture of the first little bundle for the young children at one of the refuges up North (Just waiting to arrange drop-off next week - with one thing and another the lady at the Northern Refuge and I have kept missing each other this week!)

I have added my own contribution, and sent that of my relative too, to our Christmas funds and we are now in a position to donate very substantial bundles of books (+other bits) once we have definite confirmation from the remaining refuge contacts. Thank you once again for your continued help and positive comments, they are all much appreciated smile

photo Click here - link for photo of first Christmas bundle (just thought I'd repost with it in the first line, so it shows in the little excerpt on people's list of 'threads I'm on' wink )
<bedtime bump>

What a fantastic bundle of books - love the soft toys to go with it.

Really, really well done smile

IvanaNapAfterChristmasDinner Thu 06-Dec-12 18:53:23

Thanks sand smile

Ok, try to follow me...
Refuge 1 down south - have not confirmed
Refuge 2 down south - our main contact has moved to Refuge 3
Re-Sent to new contact at Refuge 2 - has not confirmed
Refuge 3 down south - have confirmed (yea!) a nice number of children (roughly ten) all under age 4 with a couple older ones. Nickel is choosing their bundle as I type (well, not exactly, but ykwim!) to be bundled for hand over in the next week or so.

Refuge 1 up north - have confirmed, small number of children all under age two, plus a couple of new arrivals - visiting them to drop-off in the next week or so (photo on blog, as above)
Refuge 2 up north - am in the process of arranging a meeting to discuss options with them, as they cover a large area.

Did you catch all that grin
We have stayed with refuges that Nickel or I can visit in person - so that they can see we are 'real' and vice versa - but that has been a little restrictive, hence the slight delay in updates etc. We are getting there, I just wanted to give you a little peek behind the scenes so to speak, so you know that we are ensuring your contributions go towards their intended purpose and recipients. This was made all the more tangible for Nickel and myself today when we heard that there were some new additions to the refuge up north - mothers and tiny tots - very sobering. We began picking their extra books/bits asap and were very glad to have the funds available to do so smile

Hope to be in touch again to let you know our final bundles soon thanks
