Yes I know MNHQ will move this because someone will undoubtedly complain but here goes.

My dd is arranging a sponsored 10 mile walk for Malala. Proceeds to go the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where she is being treated and where they have set up a fund in her name. The money raised will eventually go towards the cause she was campaigning for - education and rights for girls in Pakistan.

We want to raise as much profile as possible, so we want people to join us on the walk, either completing all of it or some of it and more than this - we need donations.

Please don't complain that this thread is in the wrong topic. I need people to see it. My 12yo dd is arranging this and she needs support. We all need to stand behind Malala and this is just one way of doing that.

Cheers y'all! BTW please feel free to share her Justgiving page on your own Facebook walls smile

Bump worked... I've just wandered into it.

One thing Rhubarb, it's not clear on the Just Giving page that the money is specifically for Malala. In fact, it reads like its for all patients etc at Selly Oak. Now, this is an army area, a lot of my acquaintances are military wives etc and at least one has a husband with only one leg left, I don't mind the money being shared to support injured servicemen and women and families. But I'm going to see if we can find a more specifically tailored fund, or if Selly Oak has set up a more specific trust and published something usable.

Hmm I do see your point Imperial and I did worry about that, but if you go onto the Queen Elizabeth Hospital home page they do say that they have specifically set up a fund for Malala and the money raised will go directly to that and not to the hospital. Unfortunately with Just Giving there wasn't an easy way to make that clear, although I have been in touch with the QEH and they know exactly why we are raising money.

I will see what I can do.

I am in contact with the QEH and I have asked what else we can do to reassure donators that the money raised will be going to Malala's fund. We'll see what they respond with.

Finally got hold of the hospital charity. They have said that underneath the umbrella of the charity there are hundreds of separate funds such as the cancer care unit, the critical care team, etc. They have marked out one such fund for Malala and are aware of the Just Giving page. They say that the keyword for them would be Malala and this would draw their attention as to where the money was to be allocated.

A statement on their site says: "The hospital charity has set up a fund to accept donations in support of Malala. When she is well enough we will ask her how she wants those donations to be spent in support of the care she is receiving."

The man I spoke to said that in all likelihood some of the money would probably go towards the critical care team that have helped her through these past few weeks and the rest towards education for girls in the Swat area of Pakistan.

Hope this allays fears of where the money goes.
