Mumsnet Cars is a few months shy of its first birthday, so in preparation for the big day we'd like to take this chance to look at how it works for you and find out what you think of it.

We'd like your opinions so we can make sure it does everything you want it to. So if you've ever used it - or didn't even know it was there - now's the time to take a look and let us know what you think of it.

All your thoughts would be really helpful, although it would be particularly useful to hear your opinions on any of the following:

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
What are we missing?

Everyone who posts their comments below by 15 April 2013 will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a TomTom Via 135 Europe portable sat nav worth £150. This device covers the UK and the rest of Europe, and includes voice-control, Bluetooth connection for your mobile phone and TomTom's Lifetime Map update package, worth £80.

I've looked, seems good to me. You have to keep reminding me so I remember for when we need a new car, which will happen at some point.

MrsJohnDeere Wed 03-Apr-13 15:35:34

For me it's a bit like MN Local Talk boards - not used as much as it could be so doesn't have enough to interest me or make it worth checking out. When we changed cars recently I did look at it but found Parkers and the Top Gear website reviews much more comprehensive.

I'd love it if reviews included the sort of information that isn't easily available elsewhere but is vital - which carseats fit that model, how many carseats can fit etc.

Interestingly in the case of the cars we have the 'essentials' bit on the MN reviews is very wrong. It's says for one our cars that the fuel economy is 74mpg - we're lucky to get an average of 33!

NeatFreak Wed 03-Apr-13 15:36:54

I didn't know it was there, sorry! Having looked at it I think it is really useful with practical advice.
Thins I would be looking for is real advice, such as how easy it is to install car seats, leg room, how much storage, boot space (which prams would fit etc) as well as reliability, parts costs and resale value. Tips from owners would be good, like blind spots, best places to store kids snacks etc.

I can't think of anything to improve it as that would only be clear if or when I was looking for a new car, which sadly I'm not (need one though!)

SoupDragon Wed 03-Apr-13 15:38:50

I did know that it was there but, TBH, I don't do much with cars so don't need to look. I bought an SMax 2.5 years ago on the basis of reviews on MN though smile

I think MN Cars s one of those things that is only going to be of use to a small number of people at any one time.

WildThong Wed 03-Apr-13 16:40:49

I looked at it when I was changing my car. I wanted and eventually got a Honda CRV, and as ever I consulted MN. MNetters have made helped me buy loads of things from scarves to slow cookers to vacuum cleaners, to even where to go on holiday, can't see green cheese me! Unfortunately on this occasion there was no review apart from the What Car one which I already had anyway.
So the point of this long ramble is basically that I don't think it gets used, I have seen car conversations on Chat, so maybe people don't know about it so just exchange views on the general forum instead.

ValentineWiggins Wed 03-Apr-13 16:48:27

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

No and No

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?

Seems ok but info seems limited - the reviews of cars are very limited in general and don't include any useful information.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?

Price, quality and size...useful info about boot size for prams etc would be sensible, ease of fitting multiple car seats etc.

Can I suggest maybe a competition to incentivise people to actually add reviews about the cars that they own?

ShatnersBassoon Wed 03-Apr-13 17:38:47

I wasn't aware of it. I might have a look at it next time I think we can justify getting a new car. I'd want to read reviews written by typical motorists ie not people who rate a car on its sex appeal or handling on the Cresta Run.

BuiltForComfort Wed 03-Apr-13 17:54:13

Never looked at it, sort of knew it was there but hadn't thought about it.

The sort of info I want is real life reviews. An at-a-glance list of cars organised by price, stars, type, no of reviews etc would be useful.

I'm only likely to be in the market for a second hand car and more info on used values would be good. I liked the advice on how much you should be able to negotiate off the price.

I am aware of it and have looked at it - especially now, as I am looking to replace my car. I'd like to see more Mumsnet reviews but I guess that it takes a while to build up a database. I do like to see the WhatCar reviews as well, so overall I think there is a good amount of information here. I think it's easy to find what I personally want to find using the search facility.

My children are adults now, so pram capacity isn't something I need to know (until grandchildren come along - one day!). I like to know about safety, reliability, economy and how comfortable and spacious the car is.

gazzalw Wed 03-Apr-13 18:08:39

No I wasn't really aware that there was a special section dedicated to cars although I know there have been various product trials involving Mumsnetters testing certain types of car!

We are one of that rarefied breed of car-free families so I'm afraid that it's not of much interest to us and not likely to be so.

However, now that I know it's here I would recommend it to friends and family who might want some car-related knowledge and recommendations!

Katz Wed 03-Apr-13 18:15:42

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
I have and yes

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
it ok

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
real people's opinions not petrol heads or those who think all families should have a ford focus

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
Its ok, like what car it feels slightly in favour of cheaper cars and tends to mark more expensive cars down because they're expensive not because they aren't good. Well yes, but how does the actual car perform?

What are we missing?
Like others I review of how many car seats and which makes fits across the backseats.

Katryn Wed 03-Apr-13 18:16:56

I wasn't aware that there was a car page on mumsnet.

I looked up a HOnda 4 x 4 (which I just had a ride in) but there wasn't much information - no independent reviews, and couldn't find out how much a second hand one would be etc. or how reliable it is, so not much good really.

The kind of info I would like would be real reviews, how economical to run, what is the second hand value etc.

EskSmith Wed 03-Apr-13 18:18:30

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

Yes and No

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?

Seems ok and I like the link with what car, but not much info there.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?

TBH I'm unlikely to be looking on MN for the technical spec. What I would be looking for is feedback from other parents on day to day practicality, family friendly info.
Can you get 3 seats across the back. How easily does a pushchair fit in the boot? . How easy are the seat belts to use for children. Etc etc. A tick list in essential items filled in by real owners would be great.

I spent ages writing a review for the launch and when the cars were re-organised by type, my review wasn't included so I'm very hmm about that and wonder how many more reviews aren't included?

We are looking for a van/minibus type if car now eg VW Transporter and there doesn't seem to be a section for cars that will suit a larger family. There are enough of us on MN to bother having a section like this!

reastie Wed 03-Apr-13 18:21:56

Had no idea this was on mn! Had a nosy and looks really good and v useful when we come to get a new car.

I'd be looking for top rated cars in different categories - maybe a list of the top ten for different requirements (eg those in need of big boots/lots of seating/small cars/fancy pants sports option etc). I'm not really interested in all the technical jargon about the car unless you explain to me what all that means in layman's terms - I'm more interested in the colours and pretty bits whether it's good on fuel/is reliable etc.

pennylovesleonard Wed 03-Apr-13 18:35:02

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

No, not until just now. I did but I'm not buying a car in the near future so don't really need it ATM.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Quite easy, seems very straightforward.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Reviews for when I need to buy a new car.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I Think there should be more reviews, perhaps more mnetters could review their own cars?

tiggerbounce77 Wed 03-Apr-13 18:41:23

I never knew this was here, have had a look and it does look very useful, will use it when I need to buy a car

LittlePurpleCircle Wed 03-Apr-13 18:45:03

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
No, I didn't know it was there!

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
I thought it was pretty good. I liked reading reviews from people like me iykwim?

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Personal experience of the cars, ie how they are to park, whether kids get car sick, how reliable they are, and from Which, things like how well they hold their value.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
It's ok. Could do with more reviews, but like me, I suspect not many people have been using it so far. It is certainly something I will look at again when we come to replace our car.

What are we missing?
Promoting it! More reviews. Photos of real users using the cars. More photos of the insides of the cars. Offers of year-long test-drives that will be delievered to my door smile

JS06 Wed 03-Apr-13 19:00:10

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yes, as I responded to something about a Fiesta a long while back

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Straightforward, organised and sensible

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Recent experience of sales techniques and garbage like that, whether cars easy to have serviced, excellent after sales, what gizmos and gadgets are really effective, what you can forget about as an extra, how easy it is to put down seats etc

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
Great starting point and I think this will increase dramatically once people post more of their own info

What are we missing?
Long term reviews over a couple of years in the life of a family and their car, some video clips (Vine perhaps?), some podcasts from no nonsense senior manufacturers who address questions we're asking with honesty and a conscience.

katiewalters Wed 03-Apr-13 19:10:36

i knew it was there, but forgot to be honest. the site was very good and helpful and easy to use. i cant think of anything that is missing from the site, it seemed to cover all areas. some of the reviews were quite limited though, could do with being more in depth. info about what car seats the cars take, the boot space, things that people with kids would want to know are what i would want to see included, as well as the general car information

Sparklesandglitter Wed 03-Apr-13 19:17:39

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars?
This is the first time I have used mumsnet cars, I just used it to review a car I am thinking of purchasing

Did you know it was there?
No, this was the first time I have been made aware of the website

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
It is easy to navigate the website and find the information I needed

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
I would be looking for car reviews and owner reviews. I would want to know about economy, what it is like to drive etc

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I think it has a wide range of useful information

What are we missing?
I have always thought it would be frat to have a search engine so you can put in the criteria you are looking for (e.g. Boot size over 1500L, engine between 1.6 and 1.9, etc) and it shows you exactly what cars meet your spec or you enter a model you have looked at and the website shows you comparable options. This could help if people know what they need but not what is available

mumnosbest Wed 03-Apr-13 19:23:18

Sorry didn't know it was there. It looks useful and easy enough to use. Hopefully one day i'll be able to put it to good use.
The most useful thing is reviews from other parents, comments on space for car seats, prams etc and safety ratings

mumnosbest Wed 03-Apr-13 19:25:40

Ooh and a satnav would be great! It wouldn't stop me getting lost but would give my dh a break from getting the blame smile

goldenretriever Wed 03-Apr-13 19:36:28

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars?
This is the first time I have used mumsnet cars, I had a look at reviews of cars I am thinking of purchasing

Did you know it was there?
No, hadn't heard of it.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Pretty easy to navigate the website and find the information I needed

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
I would be looking for car reviews and owner reviews. Petrol efficiency would be useful.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I think it has a wide range of useful information

What are we missing?
More specific criteria options

Oooooh, nice! Didn't know that was there but very impressed. Have done a review & everything & will try to remember it's there for when our car dies.

BoysWillGrow Wed 03-Apr-13 20:18:10

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
No and yes.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Very easy

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
info on second hand cars only, average cost, reliability of certain models.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
A good range.

What are we missing?
Couldn't really say until I went through whilst looking for a new car.

LentilAsAnything Wed 03-Apr-13 20:25:14

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
No, didn't know it was there.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Easy, depending on what you are looking for, I guess.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
User reviews and expert reviews.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
Looks really good. I'm just not in the market for a car at the moment, so unlikely to use it for a long time.

What are we missing?
Car competitions? smile
MNers wanting to sell their car?

sharond101 Wed 03-Apr-13 20:43:36

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
I didn't know it was there but would have checked if we were intending on buying a new car.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
I looked up the model of car we currently own and it was very easy.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
I would be looking to find out the safety features, reliability and how much room it has as we have a baby and a dog to fit in, with all the equipment which comes alongside.
What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I was suitably impressed and always like to read non biased reviews.

What are we missing?
A search facility where you can enter in how many seats you need, 3 or 5 door, how much boot space you need, budget etc and the search comes back with which cars fit your profile.

eteo Wed 03-Apr-13 20:53:24

I had not look into it yet.
I like to know how to choose the second hand car and what to avoid/safety when selling your car privately.

twotrackmind Wed 03-Apr-13 21:09:16

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
No and no!
How easy is it to find the information you want on it
Pretty straightforward. Would be good to be able to search by car name. Mumsnet review I looked at was very brief.
What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Reviews of second-hand cars. Detailed safety info (don't like how te Whatcar reviews conflate alarms with safety).
What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)? Fine except for short mumsnet reviews.
What are we missing?
Need more user reviews - hopefully they will come with time!

Alibabaandthe40nappies Wed 03-Apr-13 21:12:16

It's ok, but there are always car magazines here which have much more detailed information so I probably wouldn't bother looking at it.

There is nothing about used cars, which is probably what most people on here are looking at.

It looks and feels a bit amateurish, a bit like a one man band website.

Sorry blush

MothershipG Wed 03-Apr-13 21:18:35

I came on last year when I was looking for a new car and used it as a starting point but then went onto the more comprehensive car sites for more info. I clicked through to the which car site quite a lot.

I posted a review of my old car while I was looking.

But as other users have there is not enough traffic to make it really useful.

Now I have a new car I have no need for this bit of MN so haven't been on it since.

Fast Wed 03-Apr-13 21:29:53

I vaguely remember looking at MNC before but I think it might have been when a previous survey/ competition was running.
It's not a part of MN that I would browse for fun like I do other topics so kind of forget it's there.
Interesting reviews and video clips would make me more likely to use it in future but only if I was actually considering buying a new car at the time.

i am another who didn't know it was there but have now looked and would use it in future.

if i was looking for a new car i'd use it but i'm not so it remains not in my field of interest i guess.

will remember it's there though and use/recommend when appropriate.

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

No and no.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?

Fairly easy.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?

Reviews from other MNetters - everything else I would look at a specialist car site for.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?

Reasonable range, but things like the 7 seater car feature - it really doesn't give any information to discriminate between the cars so is not very useful and an article on the top 10 7 seaters seems a bit much - surely top 3 would be better.

What are we missing?

Expert advice - like a webchat with an expert on haggling or selecting the right car for you.

olivertheoctopus Wed 03-Apr-13 22:48:48

Used it recently but just don't think it gets enough 'traffic' (pardon the pun) to be of much use. Response to posts is pretty low and I couldn't find reviews of the cars I wanted info about. Like someone said above, mums need info like 'can you fit 3 car seats along the back row/can you fit buggy X into the boot' etc. not the sort of info you can readily get on the likes of Autotrader and if more people could be persuaded to write up their cars and what works/doesn't work for them it would be a much more useful resource.

olivertheoctopus Wed 03-Apr-13 22:51:08

Ps I can't see any need for things like price to be on there as Autotrader more than has that covered. It's the practical day to day stuff that you can't find out elsewhere which would be beneficial.

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yes, I used it a lot (alongside What Car, Top Gear reviews and others) when choosing a new car a couple of month back
How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Reviews were good, detailed and helpful. Could have done with more, of course....

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
I wanted feedback on how the car was to drive, practicality, cost of servicing/actual MPG, experience of owndership etc.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I only looked at the reviews tbh - wasn't aware of anything else. Not sure I'd expect used car valuations to be on a par with others.

What are we missing?

Is there an option to put in your requirements and get recommendations/if you like x, have you considered y? - tend to find those helpful

Iamcountingto3 Thu 04-Apr-13 00:04:56

Oh, and having a had a very quick look again - a minor usability point. Once you click through into a car type (SUV, say) you can't then search for a particular model - they're all A-z listed. Need that option on the page...

steppemum Thu 04-Apr-13 00:07:05

Didn't know it was there, never looked.

We have an ancient second hand car and not looking to replace it yet, so no need to look at it.

When we do replace it, TBH, mumsnet isn't the first place I would look!

nextphase Thu 04-Apr-13 02:43:21

looked once.
Very few reviews on the cars I was interested in (small family cars, so nothing really unusual). So wouldn't go back.

Although, if you had a section of what pushchairs would fit in what small cars ( ie what doubles fit in the back of a yarris) that would have been invaluable for me.

I didn't know about the car section but then, living with 2 car nuts, all day to day info is readily available so I haven't been looking. Probably noticed this now as for the first time in 9 yrs I might be in the market for a new car.

Is it easy to find the info I want? No. I was looking for a summary of the specs or at least a link and didn't find it until I looked at the bottom of the What Car? Page. That was after looking at the main page and then the MN page. It should be on the front page with the model details imo.

I am most likely to look at the reviews from other real people not 'expert' journos. The Mn reviews were good where they were available. I am, for example, reconsidering the Megane as there isn't a lot if room in the back for even smaller children and as I a very likely to be ferrying around 6 ft tall teenage boys before I change cars again, this is the kind of info I need.

Haven't looked at anything but a couple of different car reviews so don't really know about the range of info available but I was disappointed that the first car I tried to look at wasn't there (only a Citroen DS4 so not a fancy car like the Porsche 911 or Lamborghini which are there).

Will defo look some more but don't find it comprehensive enough yet to be my sole or main source of info.

Joycey29 Thu 04-Apr-13 06:34:32

Didn't even know about it and have been searching sites since Jan!
Used the -product - car - threads to get info from other people. Can the two be linked?? It was so useful to ask questions from an owner and helped stop a costly mistake.
Just bought my new car and loving it - off to do a review .....

goodtoesnaughtytoes Thu 04-Apr-13 06:58:19

I didn't know about it but I only access MN on my IPhone so maybe I can't get it...

I would definitely log on via my laptop and have a look when I am next looking for a new car. I am always interested in the car threads on Chat as I am always interested in recommendations.

lottie63 Thu 04-Apr-13 07:50:53

I had no idea it exists and I'm on mumsnet everyday. Where is it? I am actually thinking of buying a car, though probably second-hand. I d be interested in fuel economy (my children are beyond pram stage). I d also like to see tips on haggling the price of a car down in showrooms smile

upinthehills Thu 04-Apr-13 08:05:24

I have looked up my car - a 2007 plate for fairly new. No mumsnet reviews and thw what car is okay but not paricularly practical.

I would like to see NCap safety stats more prominently displayed - was key to me when i was comparing cars.

Spirael Thu 04-Apr-13 08:28:03

I knew the Car section was here and have glanced at it before, but not really looked in depth because I've not been in the market for changing the car.

When I do come to replace the car, then I might come and look in more detail!

Blipbip Thu 04-Apr-13 09:10:09

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yes I have stumbled in there occasionally and always been a little anoyed that I can't find my way back easily - not good with a map, mesmile

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
I haven't really been looking for information

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
I think I would need to explore in more detail. Generally I'm very impulsive with cars and don't bother find out much info

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I was impressed when I did look but it realy isn't something that I'm really interested in

What are we missing?
A treasure hunt?

starfishmummy Thu 04-Apr-13 09:14:45

Haven't ever looked at it, I sort of knew it was there when you reminded me but it wouldn't be the first place I would think of if I was looking for car info.

Seemed easy to navigate; would use it as a starting point but the info isnt specific enough for me to just use this - for example I looked up my own car and it just said there was a big boot, whereas I would need to know dimensions.
THe what car review also didn,t give soecific enough info

I think you are missing the specific details about the car - size, petrol consumption etc

CatherineHMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 04-Apr-13 09:50:22

Just popping in to say thanks so far for all the feedback. Keep it coming, it all helps.

Firewall Thu 04-Apr-13 10:53:53

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
No, didn't know it was there.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Very easy, well laid out, not cluttered.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Reviews on different cars, fuel consumption,

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
Good wide range of info

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Yes
Did you know it was there? Yes

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
When I looked up the car I was interested in I could only find information about the new model. Not the sort of money I have to spend, unfortunately! I couldn't find anything about the cars 3-5 years older. Is it actually there? If so, it's not easy to find.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Used car reviews, reliability info, book value calculator.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I haven't delved into every corner of the site. I was a bit put out that it seems a very different identity from the main MN site and there was nothing to tempt me to stay over there for longer after I couldn't find the info I wanted. It seems more car site than MN site.

What are we missing? Hmm..

Mouseface Thu 04-Apr-13 13:19:52

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

No and nope, I didn't.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?

Easy to navigate the website but a bit basic. I went to WhatCar? when looking to chose my Mobility car. I looked at the reviews for the car I chose by MNers and they were rather mixed! One hated it, the other loved it! grin

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?

For me, I need to know what I can fit in the boot, (pushchair, shopping and walking stick?) as well as how much leg room under the steering wheel, ease of getting in and out due to my disability, how easy it is to park...

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?

It's good so far and as more people become aware of it, the more will be added making even better to use.

What are we missing?

A section for disabled drivers please. What other disabled drivers would recommend, and of course not, where to get good advice, good Motability garages where customers have been treated well and had positive experiences etc. Which cars are good for wheelchair users.

We do get all of that anyway with the Motability Scheme but tried and tested by MNers/real people is always nice to know before trundling off to a forecourt!

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

Yes and yes

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
very easy the only thing I don't like is that it's not easy to get back to where you were as it's separate from Mumsnet

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
reviews mostly, I like reading real people reviews rather than 'expert' or car mag type reviews as they give you a more realistic picture. eg can you fit 4 children, 3 dogs and 2 weeks worth luggage in it whilst towing a 6 berth caravan legally grin and without breaking down

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
it's ok but more likely to go somewhere else for used car valuations as others have said it will get better the more reviews are added

What are we missing?
We have never bought and are never likely to buy a new car. It would be good to include some older models that are still popular. Also I think a Mumsnet star rating rather would be more useful than just the What Car one.
There just aren't enough reviews on there at the moment, I am guilty of not writing a review but our newest car is a 55 plate so not sure if it would be of any use. I would use it more if there were older car models on there. For example the Fiesta is there but only the newest one and there are no reviews. DD recently bought a Fiesta for her first car. It is a Y reg, but all of the small ideal first time cars are still popular and they it would be really useful to have some reviews on there to compare them.
Maybe there should be an 'older model' section so all the reviews don't have to be put with the newest model.

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

Yes and yes. I was asked about a year ago to submit a review of my car to this site. I did, but it's not there sad

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
It's easy to find the information, but there really isn't much information there.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
What car seats and buggies are most compatible with the car. Other information is easily found on more established sites (Top Gear, Parker's Guides, Auto Trader)

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
The range is great, I think you've got everything covered. The content seems pretty light - easy to find the basics, but very little detail.

What are we missing?
More reviews from users. If others have had the same experience as me though, perhaps there are more reviews, but they've disappeared into the ether.

MyMillsBaby Thu 04-Apr-13 15:22:46

I've just been for my first ever peek at Mumsnet Cars as I had no idea it existed. I've commented and added to your pushchair reviews before, but didn't even think of you for cars!

The premise is great but it needs more reviews to make it really useful. I can imagine myself using it when we next upgrade our car. The sort of things we'll want to know are boot sizes, whether it has child locks, any safety features etc. Maybe when users submit reviews they could rate the car on a number of features using a slider to ensure they cover the salient points.

Range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer is fairly good but needs more reviews (and incentives to review!) and greater promotion.

asuwere Thu 04-Apr-13 15:56:55

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?

Yes and yes.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?

Fairly easy to navigate although would be nice to see a basic list of cars at top of each section with just name and cost etc and then clickable to more info on each one.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?

Personal real-life reviews. as others have said, space for carseats, boot space etc. Running costs.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?

It's quite good and I'm sure it will get better. I would still go somewhere else for valuations. I do like that 7 seaters have their own section - sometimes it is hard to distinguish what is a 7 seater on other sites.

What are we missing?

As said, ease of carseat fitting, boot space info.

bigflipflop Thu 04-Apr-13 18:10:39

Didn't know it existed!!! However, just been over there for a quick look and read the very useful article on MPV's and think it could prove very useful now that we're actually looking to change our car.

WowOoo Thu 04-Apr-13 19:40:11

I have looked at it before and knew it existed. Think I've searched for some info and been redirected there. I thought I was on a different website for a minute.

I don't think I found the information I needed. I got some info by searching thread archives. Wanted to know whether a certain model was good or not. I found some information, but found much more and exactly what I wanted on another specialist website.

I'd be looking for info on reliability, value and performance.

I think so far it's good. Others have pointed out that more practical info would be great, as would personal experience. Maybe a little questionnaire that asks about key features with a mark out of 5 would be an improvement.
Boot space info is all well and good - but then you have to check what size pushchair you have. Think it's easier to ask specific questions directly.

Boggler Thu 04-Apr-13 20:36:47

I've looked at the car reviews and reviewed my car as well. They are quite good although I think that it's not structured enough and too many of the reviews are lacking substance. Nearly all the reviews say that the car is great and not enough have negatives pointed out - or do we all just love our cars? I would prefer the reviews to incorporate the NCAP scores so that you can balance the safety features against the practical aspects that MN reviewers have added.

Choccyjules Thu 04-Apr-13 20:45:10

Used it often over the past six months (which is how long it took us to change our car!).
Have used both the talk threads and also the reviews section, including the threads and videos where MNetters have had extended test-drives and reviewed cars.
Found all parts useful :-) especially how there is a whatcar review set against a Mumsnet view for comparision.

pleasestoptalking Thu 04-Apr-13 20:50:19

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yes. I have posted a review of the car model I drive on there.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
It's good to get an idea of how people feel about their cars i.e. whether they really like driving them or not and what little issues come up, if any. For a full on specification and review I would go to Which or another more car-focused website

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
I would go to Mumsnet cars for information that's relevant when you have kids i.e. how many carseats does it fit - the main reason we bought a Touran was that we could fit 3 carseats across the middle row.
Another thing I looked at when we were changing cars was the dimensions. I know this may be odd but I'm a pretty crappy driver but was confident in a Zafira so knew that although I needed to fit 3 carseats across the middle I didn't want to end up with a huge car. The Touran is only marginally wider. I seriously went armed with my notepad of dimensions when we tested cars. I know, I know.
I would also want to know about boot space and how economical the car was.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I like the fact that you also link to the 'what car' review and your header info: which 7 seater; how budget will affect you etc is really good.
I think the range and quality is good. It features the cars that I looked at when we were buying a new car recently.

What are we missing?
Some of the information I mentioned in q.2. perhaps. I can't think of anything else.
Perhaps links to relevant info i.e. carseat reviews etc?

ClaraOswinOswald Thu 04-Apr-13 22:17:25

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yes, I have posted a review (think I was hoping to win a rafting trip but didn't). I also showed it to DH who is in the process of researching his next car so am basing answers on his responses.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Easy enough.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Reviews, price ranges.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
It had what I was looking for but I would be unlikely to use it more than once every few years or so tbh.

What are we missing?
Links to Autotrader or similar- not looking for new.

purpleroses Thu 04-Apr-13 22:23:09

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars?
Not til today
Did you know it was there?
No
How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Pretty good
What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Secondhand car valuations. Pros and cons of different secondhand cars (safety, reliability, etc)
What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
Good
What are we missing?
Valuations for older cars (mine's 1996 and not on there) and it would also be easier to look up valuations if you could enter your year first (which everyone knows) and then choose only from the models made in that year - rather than having a confusingly long list of models to choose from.

fossil971 Thu 04-Apr-13 22:57:28

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
YES - replaced the car last month

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Did not find much info, more details were on other specialist car websites

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Looking for a genuine review by a mumsnetter but perhaps a bit far fetched for a secondhand SEAT.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
I don't think there's much to add to other websites - there are so many cars out there. I didn't look at all the options.

What are we missing?
More mum-specific reviews on things like car seats, legroom, boot space would be helpful, also consider used cars (we can't all afford new). Perhaps try and get everyone to review their own car however old!

lindsey3uk Fri 05-Apr-13 00:36:21

I definitely did not know this was there, but so glad I stumbled across it. The way I choose to buy things is from recommendations from other mums. My children are the most important thing and their safety is paramount. I don't currently drive but am learning and the thought of buying a car that suits my needs for my children is quite worrying. Which is why I was pleased to find this. I love the discussion board section where I can ask car related questions that only mums can answer.

chickensaladagain Fri 05-Apr-13 07:25:14

Don't know if its because I'm on my iPhone but when I try to access reviews, it will allow me to select a make but not a model so I can see any reviews

I must admit, I was unaware of MN Cars. I have now had a proper look at it and left a review of our current car. I found it easy to navigate, but as others have said, there needs to be additional information added to answer the type of questions MNers would have regarding a family car. I would definitely look at this with DH if/when our car needs replacing.

MTBMummy Fri 05-Apr-13 10:14:34

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yeah, and actually used it quite a bit recently as we were looking to purchase a new car.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Very easy and I really liked that you could switch between WhatCar review and reviews from MN'ers

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
For us it was primarily what car to get, we had narrowed it down to a few that met our primary needs, but wanted some real life experiences and recommendations (Not just what a marketing company is paid to say)

*What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
What are we missing?*
I really like the current content, the only thing that I would have preferred was more traffic on the site (no pun intended) and I'm not sure how you would encourage more people to post about their own car experiences

hotair Fri 05-Apr-13 12:49:12

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
I did and I have! I remembered the announcement about the new section and went looking when I was thinking about cars
How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
Hmm not that easy to be honest- I found the forum more useful
What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Used car reviews, information about what car seats fit what cars, interior pictures.
What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
At the moment is feels a bit like a copy and paste job from whatcar. I think the information needs to be more tailored to mumsnet!
What are we missing?
You need more owner reviews, used car prices, interior pics and for it to be better tailored to mums and parents

bottersnike Fri 05-Apr-13 13:44:43

I love Mumsnet Cars, particularly the Talk section, as there are often interesting discussions about what car to get next / why this one is rubbish / how to choose between different cars etc.
It's easy to navigate and I use it for general reviews.
The range is OK but it would be really good to have reviews on used cars as well as new ones.
Competitions to win cars would be lovely, too! smile

chickensaladagain Fri 05-Apr-13 23:11:38

if you want mumsnetters to post better quality reviews, you might want to re-look at your suggestions for headlines....

Snapshot of your review Eg. 'Lightweight and easy to fold' or 'Not suitable for public transport'

grin

MmeLindor Sat 06-Apr-13 22:56:35

Have looked, cause you've told me about it. smile

Haven't looked for a while, but found it easy enough to find what I was looking for last time I checked.

Not looking for a car at the moment, but if I were, I would look.

You are missing my review. I definitely did one for my car, but it isn't there any more.

Snog Sun 07-Apr-13 08:25:00

I am only interested in the car reviews. I love the idea of hearing mumsnetters' reviews as its a good fake counterpoint to top gear. At the moment there don't seem to be any mumsnet reviews of the cars I'm interested in though

BikeRunSki Sun 07-Apr-13 10:34:10

I put a review of my car on in the very early days. I'd had my car for about a year, so it seemed a good time to do a pretty comprehensive review. I haven't looked at it since because we haven't changed cars. I had been planning to because DH applied for a job without a car (he has a company car at the moment) and would have needed to buy his own. He didn't get the job though.

Tortington Sun 07-Apr-13 10:37:12

no
Did you know it was there?
yes.

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
easy

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
info on second hand cars

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
A good range.

What are we missing?
dunno til I want a new car.

This is all really useful stuff - many thanks to those who have posted so far. If you haven't done so already, don't miss this opportunity to tell us what you want from Mumsnet Cars. We want to hear from everyone, however much or how little you have to say. Don't hold back! grin

Have you ever looked at Mumsnet Cars? Did you know it was there?
Yes I looked at it when I was buying my last car. It was helpful!

How easy is it to find the information you want on it?
It's pretty easy - the search function is useful when you've spotted a car you like and want to see what other people think of it.

What sort of information are you most likely to be looking for at Mumsnet Cars?
Reviews from people who have owned them.

What do you think of both the range and quality of the content Mumsnet Cars currently has to offer (car reviews, used car valuations, news and advice)?
It could do with more info on older cars for those of us on a tight budget.

What are we missing? Nothing else I can think of
