Car seats

Maxi Cosi Cabriofix

I have just discovered by accident that there is a five year lifespan for a Maxi Cosi Cabriofix, as hidden away in the small print of the safety section of their instruction leaflet.

This is presumably down to damage or degradation of the component materials.

As a result we are hastily having to buy a replacement car seat for DD as a matter of urgency.

I would imagine that this might also have insurance implications in addition to the obvious safety ones.

Now you might all have been aware of this but I wasn't and so I just wanted to let people know in case it was relevant to someone out there.

I wonder if they're all the same. Is it 5 years use or 5 years from first use? Iykwim.

its counted from date of manufacture - its on the label but not obvious. each brand has a different time but 5 years is pretty standard - think britax might be longer - will say on their websites

Where did you find your date of manufacture? We are pretty sure we are out of time due to DS' age but it would be interesting to know. We don't have the instruction leaflet.

It wasn't a particular dig at Maxi Cosi we were just completely unaware of this shelf life on car seats (and I presume it applies to car seats for older children too but am now going to check this point), and wanted to let others know who were in a similar position to us.

It would be a sticker on bottom of seat. Personally I think its a bit of a con. Britax says their seats dont expire in this country?

I can understand it when seats are exposed to extremes of hot / cold like USA and Australia.

I would use a six year old infant carrier for my DD if i knew it had been well cared for and I have spent lots of money on ERF.

i think its to with the natural degradation of the materials used to make it. its the same with hats and body protectors for riders and helmets for motorcyclists. items such as these should be replaced every few years no matter if they havent been worn or used.

On the cabriofix front- does anyone have any good advice on how to put the cover back on, I had to take it off to wash it and now I am having real difficulty putting it back on. It's the straps that are causing the problem, I can't seem to work out how they go! The user manual doesn't really help either.

Any help would be appreciated as at the moment we can't use the car!

Has anyone experienced hysterical screaming when they put their little one in the maxicosi cabrofix car seat?
