well these links from google seem to suggest its anywhere between 279 - to over 300 squid to buy new - so - i would go upto 150 - if i really wanted it

although i wouldn't pay that for a tent personally

i think 150 is proportionally as much as i would be prepared to go for a second hand tent that costs 279 new

It looks like a good tent. Can you find one a similar size in an outdoor shop to check out there is enough space?

humptyNdumpy · 01/05/2009 22:41

That is a good idea blithe. Might drag dh round the camping shops tomorrow

We are looking at getting an Outwell 5 person tent so I have spent the last few weeks poring over the brochure! The Minnesota looks quite decently spacious actually. Outwell have a good reputation for quality tents.

There are a lot of Yeomans outdoor tent shows on at the moment where they have all these tents up for inspection.

I would also email the seller and ask in so many words, is there any wear and tear and damage at all, any damp mould, any holes in groundsheet or missing guys/pegs etc. Basically you want it to be as if new for that price.

I googles and I've just missed our local Yeoman show. It finished last Saturday - unlucky!

I will email the seller just to check. Would you pay that price for it Blithe?

I'd prefer one with a sewn in groundsheet.

What you going to put on the floor in that living area?

Outwell good though, I think.

I'm pleased I feel of use for once!!!

if you go for that, you might just want to think about taking a tarpaulin for the floor, which is quite normal.

Main problem with that is if it rains, then it has a habit of dripping off the tent, onto the tarpaulin, then it just goes everywhere. The tarp would need to fit inside the tent, so that any drips jsut go onto the ground.

Perrrrrrsonally, I'd go for a tent with a sewn in groundsheet to avoid all that. But people do have those tents, we did.

Is it you thinking of Tenby?

yy MMOC, tis me

I am thinking of trying to work out how we can afford a holiday this year. I figure a cheap camping weekend nearby to see if we like it and then a week away someone different should do the trick.

I was hoping we could afford a nice cottage but having looked at the prices its not to be

Still, I'm sure we'll have lots of fun camping!

Cottages cost an absolute fortune, don't they!

Stuff for camping can add up, plus campsite fees, but main thing is that you can use it all again, and there are loads of campsites around that area, to suit what kind of holiday you want. We started with basic stuff (we've only just got a tent with a sewn in groundhseet) then upgraded a bit at a time.

And the beaches around Tenby can be stunning. I hope you enjoy it.

I'm trying to pursue DH (whose adamant we should forgo the holiday this year) that camping is an investment in our future

I'm trying to find things are cheap but still
durable and comfortable where need be.

Its quite a challenge!

Ooh I love tents but unfortunately hate camping unless its in my garden which is no good to you I know! £100 is enough though for secondhand

Report
blithedance · 02/05/2009 21:04

Ah yes, I see now. The update of it has a sewn in groundsheet.

We have camped without a sewn in groundsheet quite a lot, has not been a problem with water. Are you planning to camp in a flood?I don't think it's a show stopper but you do need to be scrupulous about pegging down the "skirt" of the outer and then having a separate groundsheet for the indoors (I'm sure one will be supplied). I for one don't mind a bit of field inside the tent!

For something secondhand, 1/3- 1/2 of the new price is probably a good guide unless it is literally unused. £100 would maybe be a good price up to £125?

Report
toddlerama · 02/05/2009 21:21

Really, really make sure the groundsheet is inside of the tent and not poking out of the edges at all! I got flooded out twice before I realised why and had to sleep in the stinky old car.

I would recommend this one if you can afford one (with carpet preferably )

You could get a new (last season) Outwell Colorado 6 for £150 here

I don't know much about that model, but you could check out the reviews on UK campsite

Umm obviously I meant a Cleveland not Colorado

We have the Montana 6 (as do many other people on here), it really is a fantastic tent, but can be an expensive choice if you aren't sure if camping is for you/your DH.

....On the other hand, it does really make camping much more pleasant if the weather is foul; as it is watertight, draught proof, and is light and airy - you can sit in it without feeling all claustrophobic.

We have the kids room and carpet for ours - it really is our home from home

Report
blithedance · 03/05/2009 21:19

Yes the thing about a decent tent rather than some cheapo bendy-pole-dome thing that floods out and blows over at the first puff is that you are more likely to enjoy camping and want to do it again.
