Oh good it's quite near Darlington then.Ds wants to go to Railway museum there.
Would it be really far to travel to Beamish from there?...any idea of travel time?

There is also a railway museum at Shildon "the locomotion" which is not bad. I would say BC is about half an hour ish away from Beamish

There is also Lightwater Valley - theme park with rollercoasters etc about 45 mins from BC, and lots of other things to do. How old is DS? Any interests in particular?

DL1 - I live near Winston, about 7 miles from Barnard Castle.

For trains, what I usually suggest to guests with train-obsessed small boys is that they drive to Darlington station (30 mins tops) get the train to York (30 mins) and look at the railway museum there which I think has the original Stevenson's Rocket engine plus lots more in it. York isn't the best place to drive to or park, and this is the best (and wet-day-friendly) way to see it IMO.

Barnard Castle is surrounded by farms and animals. Can't move for lambs at the moment.

Darlington to Beamish is not v. far at all. Darlington to Chester-le-Street is about 20 mins and from there to Beamish is another 10, I suspect.

There is great walking to be had near Stanhope. DLI and Onlyaphase, i didn't mean to not include you to the meetup too. Maybe you'll find it too far? (hope not)

Onlyaphase, you've forgotten about the railway museum in Darlington. They built the new steam engine. It's small, and not a patch on Shildon or York, but still worth a trip for small people.

I buggered off at 18 but we do a lot of trains when we go home .
