Camping near Lake Ullswater (or in the Lakes in general)

Hi all

We're taking the dcs camping this week for the first time ever. DH is combining this with a stag weekend walking trip in the Lakes (he'll abandon us for a day to go on the walk and then come back to continue the holiday!) so we'd like to be as close to the walk as possible (its near Lake Ullswater)

Having never camped before, and with dcs aged 3 and 4 we have no idea what we're doing, so any recommendations of campsites, or advice in general would be fab!

There is a fabulous but simple campsite at Low Wray/Wray Castle, but that's near Ambleside.

Have fun, I am

Thanks! I'll check it out now!

I'm really excited about doing something different (not our usual kind of holiday!) but also terrified about the prospect of all four of us in such close proximity for so long!!

Maybe I'm too late and you've already gone but we have camped a few times at Side Farm on the very southern tip of Ullswater. It's right on the lake, plus it has a riding stables attached, and a cafe which does cooked breakfasts.

There are a couple of big campsites halfway up Ullswater, we stayed at one of those too and it was fine, but I particularly like Side Farm.

I also recommend Side Farm. It is quite a basic site - has loos and showers, but I have been there many times.
Remember to take lots of stuff to keep warm at night, last time I camped in May I ended up wearing 2 lots of clothes inside a sleeping bag, under a duvet!
