Lots won't be fully booked, we never book more than a week ahead and there are always plenty. We went to a campsite called (I think) Bossiney Farm) at Tintagel last July, only booked the week before. it was small and fairly quiet, you could walk down to a quiet beach and into Tintagel.

My back garden is free. lol!
Hope to have some sun to put the tent up in the garden for my Dc during the holidays so we can have a camp out again.

You can go on a whim. We do, we wait for good weather and then book a day or two before. The big well-advertised campsites get full up at peak times, they're the ones most likely to have prominent websites, the ones you find when you browse the internet looking for a campsite. But the smaller, less commercially organised sites, are far more likely to have spaces at short notice or not even take bookings.

And the sites right on the coast with good water access do fill up fast.

You need to find the small, less advertised sites. The ones a mile inland, or on Dartmoor, or on little farms. We find them sometimes by looking on Ordnance survey maps for a small campsite sign. Or there are ways of searching the web to find them but if you just go via the big camping sites you tend to get the big busy sites.

and half the people who have booked won't turn up because of the weather anyway

look up broadway house in Cheddar- we go there loads, rarely over booked and lots of good quality facillities as well. Longleat do-able, and you ahve also got cheddar/ Glastonbury / Wells / Weston Super MAre in easy drive

Good point, marymoocow, there'll be LOADS of spaces at the moment. We keep cancelling our planned camping trips this year.

here you go will be envy of you if you go there, we went for Whitsun (ask for the pitches by badgers Hole- yes I know it sounds like a joke but they are huge and away from the noisier area)
