Camping

Did anyone else survive camping on the very wet and blowy night of Sunday 27th May?

We did - just! Wow that was an experience!

Even though we have done loads of camping trips we definitely consider ourselves hardened campers after that one. We got back from four nights in the Isle of Wight yesterday. what a wash-out that was.

Had to put tent up in rain on Sunday - not a great start.

Thought tent was going to blow away in the night. It was swaying every where. Fortunately we had enough pegs down to keep it on the ground. Although bought some extra pegs from camp shop day after to be prepared for anymore bad weather.
Our cooking stove and fridge which were in the living area got blown over. DH and I barely slept a wink through getting up and picking things up and pushing tent pegs back into ground. Yaaaaawn!! DDs, however, slept through it all
When we woke up on the Monday morning loads of tents around us were collapsing. One poor woman in camping shop crying her eyes out because everything in her tent had got drenched. The thought did cross our minds slightly about coming home but we stuck it out and glad we did. Did have one nice day on the Tuesday but most of the trip was rain.

Ah well. Just have to dry the tent out now ready for our next trip in a couple of months. It hasn't put me off.

We packed up Sunday night and came home - the electric had gone out on site and we didn't want to risk being without any heat overnight

Was that the whole campsite RD?

We never have an electric hook up when we camp always have the standard pitch. Our stove and fridge are all gas run. Then we have battery operated torches and lamps. Only heating we have is numerous jumpers, duvets and sleeping bags.

Think so - was at Christchurch. They reckoned it would be up within 2 hours, but we didn't like to risk it. We were already wet from our day out in the rain, the wind was picking up and it was forecast to get very cold in the night). We had a little electric radiator in the camper but not much use without electric .

Wasn't too much of a loss - we went at 8pm instead of noon the next day. We are STILL trying to get everything dried off though (although we might be making headway today as it hasn't rained here yet)

(oh and the kids were miserable and didn't like going to the toilet blocks in the rain - was just the last straw really)

ds did camping with cubs at a centenary camp. It was his first time in a tent, and hasn't put him off (thankfully, as we are off on our first trip tomorrow)

No. Our tent literally blew away, along with most of the rest of the field. Do not camp on a cliff in a gale...

We were camping on the coast of west Dorset so got a bit of a hammering on Sunday night. I was trembling away thinking sleeping in the car might be a better option, whereas DH just kept saying ' oh I find I sleep much better when it's raining, the repetitive noise on the tent is quite soothing and makes me sleep like a log' yeah right.......Thing is he did sleep like a log and I just stared at the roof of the tent willing it to stay up.

Yep, we survived! This was our first go with a sewn-in groundsheet so we felt like we had luxury. We did peg the cooker stand to the ground though (in porch) as we were worried about it getting knocked down with the tent flapping around. We didn't come back until yesterday and had a great week, if a bit damp. Staying on a site with wonderful showers and limitless hot water helps of course.

well we surrived that night
we were at whitecliff bay from the sat-sat in the isle of wight and thanks to my husband going out in the pooring rain and strong winds at3am hammering the tent pegs in our tent was fine and all its contents fine and dry!
And believe it or not we came home with a sun tan

We survived it! Although we did have to get up in the night to peg the front of the tent down again.

Our friends' daughter's pup tent blew clean away and they found it the next morning in a completely different field.

Fortunately she'd discovered during the day that it leaked and decamped into our tent.
