Road trip summer 2016 - France or Italy (mobile home type holiday)

We're thinking of doing a bit of a road trip next summer - and have heard great things about Union Lido or somewhere similar - but it seems much further to drive? Is it worth it? We've only driven to Paris or Holland previously but think we can make it an adventure.

Any tips? Is August massively busy in France / Italy? Weather reliable?

Any comments specifically on Union Lido or recommendations for other sites (want aqua parks etc will have 11 & 7yr olds).
