Hi

Can anyone please recommend a campsite in this area? And best things to do?

We will be travelling from royan ish to Caen and stopping there abouts for 3 nights(so travel either side and 2full days there)

Will have been on the coast for 11 nights I expect preference for this part of holiday will be to spend a day at a chateaux (there are so many, bit overwhelming) maybe with wine tasting for dh thrown in/later on, and a day messing around by a lake/river?

Any ideas gratefully receivedGrin

I had a lovely stay in Amboise, at a campsite on an island years ago!

Hi
You could try this one, it's about 20km north of Saumur. Plenty of chateau to choose from and wineries in the Saumur area! Plus a couple of lakes not too far away either.

I think that campsite looks a bit poor for a french campsite TBH.

We have stayed at le Moulin fort in chenonceaux, which is wonderful. You can camp right on the riverbank!

We stayed at Camping des Saules a few years ago. It was lovely. Big pitches, very friendly staff, they did a hog roast one day on the spit/bbq outside, you could smell it all day then hard to resist come dinner time. Very near Cheverny (nice cycle path to it from campsite) and Chambord, both of which are impressive in different ways. Don't know about wine tasting as had 2 small DCs with us. Small outside pool which we had to ourselves.

We stayed here for about 5 nights a couple of years ago Des Marais.com

The pitches were big and the showers and pool were clean. It had a nice on site restaurant and shop too. We mostly went everywhere by bike and train, the cycle routes were brilliant.

It was in a tiny village though, so there'd be more to do in Amboise and there's the most amazing patisserie in the world in Amboise, I'd camp outside it if I could Grin

we stayed here 2 years on the trot...think I found it on Mn originally
hard to say what made it so good just a very relaxing site-simpleish, pretty clean, enough space for small kids and a pool lovely views over the river (2nd year we had a river pitch) downside needed to drive to most places...did a few walks from the site but mainly had to drive but big hypermarket not far and chateaux and the zoo which ds loved feeding the giraffes and dh fascinated by the vultures

they had there own vineyard rose chilled in the shop which was v nice too Grin

would second the patisserie in Amboise -if I remember rightly there was also some fantastic wine shops and really nice looking restaurants there as well...unfortunately we got our timing wrong and arrived just after they shut so had to eat patisserie for lunch ..

the knights show at Saumur was also good and some v good restaurants there as well...

Really recommend the zoo where you walk through a canyon and all the birds are just there next to you.

We stayed at //www.loire-gites.com 2 years ago and would certainly recommend it.

Lots to do in the area and owners are incredibly lovely and helpful.

didn't stay at Amboise but wish I did. It's worth visiting museum with replicas of Leonardo da Vinci's inventions. Also, his tomb is in the chateau. Village/town looked lively. I think we saw watersports on the river. My favourite chateau was Chenonceau. Saw some campervans/tents near the river here. Night skies in the Loire are beautiful. Enjoy.

We stumbled across da vinci's tomb in the chateau. Was amazing.

Tulipbulbs thanks for the heads up on the Leonarda da Vinci chateau - just shown it to my eldest DS and he says: "We've got to go there!".

Off to the Loire this summer between Blois & Tours so this is about an hour away but looks like it will be worth the day trip.

Any other recommendations (DS's are 10 & 12).

We stayed at La Garangeoire in June, it's lovely and highly recommended. They have a lake there, and a few canoes, peddle boats and a rowing boat you can use free, you just pay a deposit. The restaurant is very good, we only ate there on our last night but would have more if we'd known how good it was.

It's about half an hour from La Roche Sur Yon.

For a day trip Amboise would be great as there is lots of free parking, even for the Motorhomes. Loads of restaurants and yes, the Patisserie looks amazing!
Next stop, Port de Limeuil, Dordorgne, but having a few days here first.

The site at Amboise is lovely. We spent two weeks there last year. It's busy but has lots of good clean facilities (I only queued once for showers) and is only a walk into the lovely town. The boys made loads of friends and it's very safe to go around on bikes and to the playground. There's free access to the municiple swimming pool which is also great. It's also very very cheap, I think we paid €100 for 12 nights. Loads to do in the area too.

Just back from a fab 10 days at Chateau des Marais, really lovely medium sized site. Very clean & plenty for our boys to do there.

Tulipbulbs, Chateau Du Clos Luce has to be one of the best ever places we've visited, ticked so many boxes for my two boys (10 & 12). Thanks again for recommending it.
