Camping

tents good for wind/outwell montana

We've just returned from two weeks camping in Cornwall. It was our first long trip and we used our new Vango Avington for the first time. We had a few days of really strong winds (20+ mph) and although the tent withstood these without collapsing it was being blown about a lot more than other tents. And inside the tent it was really really noisy and a few times it did feel like the tent was going to collapse at any moment!

There were a good few Outwell Montanas at the site and they seemed to fare well. As did other steel pole tents. Is this what we really need to be thinking about if we want to get maximum wind withstanding?

How have MNers with Montanas found their tents have been in strong wind? What does it feel like inside the tent?

What other tents seem to withstand wind particularly well?

Thank you!

It might be where and how you pitched your tent that caused wind issues. I read a brill post on a camping forum recently about how to ensure a tent is ok in wind. Will hunt for it..

We have an Outwell Bearlake (no steel poles) and we were also in Cornwall recently. We had gusts of 35mph and our tent was holding up really well, although it was shaking and creaking a lot and the noise really kept me awake all night. The DCs slept right through all this though.

I was amazed that the tent didn't collapse, although it sounded as though it would come down any time!

My concern with steel poles is that if they do collapse, they may come down with a force and cause injuries.
