Camping breakfast - what can I make?

Hi, am going camping for the first time in ever next weekend, with some family and kids, and I am doing breakfast the first morning. Have a one ring burner and a small camping frying pan.

So, I will make posh coffee for the adults, hot choc for the kids, but what can I make for us to eat? Needs to be reasonably healthy/nutritious, looks like I have made an effort, but something that won't give me a nervous breakdown...

What would you recommend?

Eggy bread with beans!!!! Grin I've never had posh coffee whilst camping, in fact the time it takes to boil water means I rarely get a cup of tea!

Go to the pound shop. Buy a bag of those individually wrapped choc croissants. Serve with posh coffee. Sorted.

Or sausage sarnies. Always good.

If you only have one ring, how are you making the posh coffee while intending to cook a breakfast? Won't the coffee have gone cold while you're frying up?

Agree with usual (to the point where we have purchased a 55l Icey Tek to carry enough bacon to last the two weeks we are in France :o)
You could do pancakes, prepare a fruit salad the day before you go (or pile a bowl up with brightly coloured fruit) and buy some naice yoghurts if you fancy posh. Variety boxes of cereal always please DCs as well.
TBH I would avoid the hassle but take a nice table cloth and buy pretty paper napkins which covers the "effort" part of the morning. Better by far to have something that people can have when they are ready- it's almost impossible to get DH, DS and I to breakfast at the same time while camping, what with trips to the showers, dog walking and friends calling to play. I imagine that you could end up waiting for hours for all your party to put in an appearance :o

Scratch the posh coffee...

Breakfasts I make when camping -

Bacon/sausage sandwiches

Boiled eggs and fresh crusty bread

Pancakes with nutella

Fresh or dried fruit with granola yogurt and honey

Porridge with honey and cream

Also always have cereal, often all kids want is a weetabix.

Scrambled eggs and hot roast salmon flaked through at the end. Or do omelettes with different fillings? Love eggy bread too but that could take all day for so many mouths and only you doing it! My daughter can eat her own body weight in 'French toast" as we call it!!
Late morning you could make sweet French toast for the kids. Sandwich together the bread with jam or nutella. Dip in the egg mix, fry both sides then drop onto a sugared plate and drench (like a doughnut). Guaranteed to raise a smile on a wet day!!

Wow so many replies thank you.

Will use the one ring to do the posh coffee first, will need to drink it before I can wake up enough to start cooking food!

Am loving the idea of french toast or pancakes, and good idea to have cereals too - my DD loves eating them dry like crisps!

Thank you all so much I knew this was the place to ask Flowers

I have to say, I'd be going with something ready done, like ready-made pancakes or croissants, or for a one pot wonder like porridge. Even at home using 2 good gas rings it takes a good 15 mins to cooke enough pancakes to feed my family. If you're trying to feed lots more people it will take you ages and you'll all end up eating in stages.

If you buy (or pre-cook) some then you can just warm them through on the hob.

Porridge is good for healthy/nutritious brekky types + you can add jam, syrup, chocolate chips, strawberries, whatever takes your fancy.

Personally I'd save bacon sarnies for an easy lunch or for when everyone is cooking together and you have more rings on offer.

Hee hee penelope my tired brain read
'Porridge... You can add jam, syrup, chocolate, chips, strawberries...' I'm with the healthy/nutritious brekky types all the way if they're having porridge & chips...

I agree you need your proper coffee. I have one of these which has the advantage of being both unbreakable and insulated.(we use it as our hime one, too - saves glass replacements).

Take a big frying pan. Cook bacon. Bacon butties.

The problem with individual omelettes / pancakes etc is the time they will take to cook for a group.

Take a packet of flat wraps - any kind will do, I use Sainsbury's wholemeal wraps. Lay one in the frying pan. Sprinkle liberally with grated cheese, put another wrap on top, heat gently for as long as you think. Flip whole thing and cook until both wraps are hot and cheese is melting and just starting to bubble. (it is v quick to cook) - slide out on to a chopping board, cut in quarters and serve.

Big pan of scrambled eggs?

Ok after discussion with DH we are doing boxes of cereals, posh coffee, and bacon butties hurrah. But I want to do the cheesy wrap thing as well now, that sounds goooood!

A million thanks to all of you expert campers.

You can embellish toasted cheese wraps by spreading a layer of jar pasta sauce over the bottom wrap before sprinkling the cheese, or you could add ham and have a cheese and ham toasted wrap....

Or use wraps and Nutella.

Oh, and little boxes of cereals?
Washing-up-averse campers have been known to cut the top off the whole little packet, open it up and pour the milk straight into the packet before eating with spoon as usual.

You can get little coffee sachets you hook onto the mug and pour the water on. Individual filter coffee.

Mmmmmmmmmm bacon buggies! We live in France so 'real' bacon is a rare treat.

Most popular breakfasts round these parts are real coffee, and ready made / premixed pancakes or crepes with various jam / chocolate / banana toppings. Porridge on cold mornings. Fry ups of sausages and eggs with fresh bread. Tartine - which is basically fresh baguette liberally spread with butter, jam and / or Nutella, dipped in a bowl of hot choc or milky coffee. And fresh viennoiserie of course - one advantage of camping in France in the morning delivery from the local boulangerie. Though it doesn't beat bacon sarnies for me!

Beans and franks with toast (you can get a toast holder thingy)
Pancakes? I put all the dry ingredients (I do chocolate chip ones) into a ziplock bag, then just add milk on the morning I'm cooking them into the bag, rezip and mush around until it's mixed.

Great ideas here ... But WTF is an IceyTek that keeps bacon cold for 2 weeks? Really?

Report
TheFantasticMrsFox · 08/07/2014 20:48

Theoretically fairy, I have yet to test the actual longevity of its bacon cooling properties.
The Icey Tek is a super duper cool box and is actually one of my favourite ever items :)

You will need to add some ice to the box every 3 days or so...and make sure the kids don't open it all the time and leave the lid open.

And your bacon will be FINE!

Oh dear... The essential camping kit list is growing... Have googled and that is so what I need cheaper than fridge hire for France trip but now to break the news to DH that if he expects to take clothes and a chair the roof box purchase is also essential! GrinGrin

We cook bacon, an egg and baked beans/mushrooms/tomatoes etc in foil pouches over the fire or on the camping stove - rub some oil on the inside of the foil pouch, line with the bacon first, then add the other ingredients on top.

If you have lots of people, bacon baps are the easiest!

Beetroost can I have some more info about the breakfast foil parcels please? Do you just put everything in the same foil parcel then bung it directly on the ring of the camping stove? Thanks!
