Best campsite in Isle of Wight for first first time campers

After much research and deliberation (some if it on this camping forum- you guys are great!) we have finally bought our first family tent. This is going to be our first camping trip on our own. We are thinking of camping in the Isle of Wight for a week, starting next weekend.

Has anyone camped in the IOW? Any recommendations for good campsites? Good loos and showers are a must. Campsites that allow campfires would be an added bonus. I would like our first camping trip to be a success in order to keep DH on board for future camping trips.

Also, is one week long enough for the IOW? It's a pretty small island and I'm hoping that there is enough activities for us to do and not get bored.

Valium I can't book the fishing trip online as I can't find the cafe that you've mentioned..... looking at trip adviser reviews it seems that there has been a change of ownership in the cafe.

Odd not of

valiumredhead Sun 18-Aug-13 10:03:55

You need to book the fishing asap as it's popular. On the sea front a ventnor there is a cafe on your left if you are facing the sea called besties and spinkys, or something of, anyway, go in there to book!

Thanks Positive I've just sent you a PM.

Captain I've shortlisted that campsite but it is a coastal location and someone said that it can get very windy on the coast?

Valuim what a fab suggestion, thank you. My DS is going to love mackerel fishing.

Thank you all for your fab suggestions x

Adgestone! We went there for three consecutive years. Fantastic campsite ... Lovely showers and loos (kept very clean). Has a swimming pool, little shop, small fish and chip shop on site, swings etc for the CDs. You most certainly won't get bored ... Blackgang chine, robin hill (they are sister parks so you can buy a ticket which lets you get into both parks, or if you buy a normal ticket you can return as many times as you like for 7 days. There's Dinosaur Isle, then the zoo is only a bit further down the road, Seaview Wildlife centre, plenty of places to go horseriding, Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House ... Can you tell I love the island?! One place I wouldnt recommend is Languard (or something similar) ... Friend went there and said it was awful .. not well looked after and dirty. Hope you find somewhere!

It does look like it might be windy though on the cliff , I'd love to camp there!

Grange Chine. Lovely, friendly campsite and fab beach not many people go to.

valiumredhead Sun 18-Aug-13 09:16:29

Yes, fields of tents just off the military rd.

captainbarnacle Sun 18-Aug-13 09:15:34

Or the very little campsite inland at Compton farm?

captainbarnacle Sun 18-Aug-13 09:14:18

Chale is about 15miles from Compton. I think it's Grange Chine - 3 miles from Compton - you can see? About 2 fields of tents.

valiumredhead Sun 18-Aug-13 09:12:35

Well it's very near Compton beach, is it the chale one?

Look into the ferries carefully. If you change your times to evening and early morning you can get it for about 60-70£ return. It might be a bit inconvenient, but if it saves £100 you might think its worth it. If you want help with this, then PM me and I can have a look for you. - living here and having to pay these prices every time I want to go off the island I have learnt how to get the cheapest going! wink

www.grangefarmholidays.com/ Great campsite on west coast of island - most beautiful. Farm animals, showers, playground, fantastic unspoilt beach, nice shop on site and friendly owners. The is no campsite at Compton beach.

valiumredhead Sun 18-Aug-13 09:02:05

My ds went mackerel fishing on one of the tours at ventnor-was the highlight of the holiday, he caught 20 fish!

When I say book ahead for the fossil hunt that means ASAP BTW, we had to try three times before getting in, but we were restricted for dates each time. We've had 5 stays on the IOW in the last 4 years, love it there.
