Campfire cooking

I vaguely remember a campfire meal that involved baking dough on a stick, then filling the cavity with jam or peanut butter. Was this damper bread?

Any ideas? Recipes? Or alternative suggestions for kids to cook their supper?

Yep, that's a damper! Flour & water ... google will get you oodles of recipes and ideas.

Hmm I don't remember the making dough part. Fun baking the stuff on sticks, but I'm really not sure I can be bothered with all the rest of it - this is meant to be a lightweight trip.

I wonder, would it work if I freeze a few batches of dough in advance?

How on earth woudl you keep the dough frozen on a lightweight trip?! Just take a small bag of flour and a plastic bag to mix it in :-)

blackbirds - jam sandwich (pref blackcurrant),egg and sugar. Mix egg,dip sandwich and fry, sprinkle with sugar. You should be able to do this (just) in a set of mess tins if you cut the sandwich.

Sausages, sausages and more sausages.....

Baked potatoes in embers of a real fire, if you like the sanitized version rap in tin foil - if not eat the ash as well.

Bannnas, skinned, sliced down middle and choc buttons in cut (wrap in tin foil and put in embers.

Marshmallows toasted. Toasted MM between digestive biscuits.

I have given up making dampers on sticks and now just make the dough flat and cook in in a frying pan slowly and it turns out like a big scone.

We ended up having sausages, burgers, marshmallows, sausages, toast, corn-on-the-cob and cheese. Oh, and sausages. Basically anything you could stick on a skewer!

I never thought of mixing dough in a plastic bag - what a good idea! Must try it.
